Strange Browser Behavior

Apr 13, 2005 11:23PM PDT

Ok, I've been having some trouble with my browsers lately, and did the whole gamut of fixes (spyware, virus scans, HJT logs, you name it). I even formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP. But I was still having trouble with what seemed to be "timeout" issues. Some pages would load fast, others slow, some not at all. I'd get the "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" page, and I'd have to refresh the browser in order to get the page to load. I even tried my spare modem, and had the same problem. Just on a whim, I tried loading up AOL, which wouldn't load properly at first. Once it finally connected, the browser within AOL works great, just like my IE or Netscape connections used to! Does anyone know why my we surfing is great within AOL, but iffy at best when going directly through IE, Firefox, or Netscape?

Maybe not the time...

It happens on my machine, as well as my wife's. And the time of day seems irrelevant. Also, AOL seems to browse just fine, but IE6, Netscape, Firefox, any of those used alone give me problems. Is that a DNS issue? Or my ISP?

Not this time.

The issue is real and will vary according to what DNS (server) is being attacked. AOL's browser is inside their "world" and should behave differently.

You are not alone in posting this issue, but there is nothing I see incorrect on your machine given what you've posted.

Now what?

So is this something that can be fixed, or something I just have to live with? If so, how do I go about fixing this issue?

I think youhave to ...

Use the Smith & Wesson approach here. Hope they find the perps or solution soon.

I'm seeing far too many people reinstall the OS, call for support and more over this issue.

You did call it in?

Who?

Hope who finds a solution soon?

I've called this in to Compaq, as well as Verizon DSL. I've asked around, been to forums, nobody seems to have a straight answer for me.

Hey, I see that EXACT ISSUE!

I'm on Verizon DSL in Mass.

They know about this, but maybe not all the techs.

Can I write "bozos"?

Solved!
Apr 15, 2005 12:14AM PDT

I spoke to Verizon again last night, and there IS an issue with their servers in the NYC area. They said it's been going on for about 3 weeks now (exactly how long I've been trying to solve this problem), and they'r working on it, but running into problems. They said AOL runs through differently, so that's why my AOL is still fast. Hopefully they resolve this soon, but at least now I know it's not my machines.

There are many articles now about this.
