Storing music on DVD-R

I need to back up a large number of MP3 files.
I have a Dell Dimension desktop that's about six years old.
It has a DVD-ROM drive but not a burner, and I'd like to back up to DVD-R's.

I need to know what external DVD burner to buy and which media are the best quality for archiving? I've never burned dvd's before, but I've burned many cd's. Can I use the same software?
By the way, just what is the difference between "+R" and "-R"?
