storage of pix

Oct 10, 2004 10:45PM PDT

I have a Sony Cybershot and am about to take a trip on which I don't want to take my computer. Isn't there some kind of device I can take with me that allows me to download my pix into something samll and convenient, and then download a whole big BATCH of pix into the computer when I get home? What are these devices called and where does C-Net review them? Many thanks, Mpadno

This is a new field and there are hundreds of such devices on the market.

This is a fast growing market.

With all types of extra capabilities:
Viewers
Printer connections
TV connections

I have seen very few reviews. And most of them are outdated.

I suggest you go to

http://www.google.com

and search for -> portable digital storage

Since these devices contain a hard disk, they tend to be expensive.

I have the Vosonic Pro unit like you see at http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk/rev.php?id=148

The units are very cheap being under 99 bucks and the VP2060 X'S-Drive II was under 80 bucks last time I looked. Due to some hard disk upgrading in laptops, I had a spare 11GB drive to put into the VP2060 and my best friend got that one. I have the one with the MP3 player and a 40GB drive I got from computergeeks for under 80 bucks.

These are not "expensive" as such items go and cheaper than what more memory cards for the camera would be.

There is another solution, but using an iPod with the Belkin unit is not acceptable to me since iPods are targets for theft. The Vp2060 is some boring brick unit that is not a MP3 player and people don't seem to want to steal it.

Thanks a lot; that's quite helpful. I read the review of the device you describe and then I went on C-net to find it, but all the sites I saw were pricing it at well over $100. (And it sounds as if that particular device has quite a fewe disadvantages.) What are these things called? Are they "memory storage devices," or what? And do you have a thought on where I might find one at around $80? Thanks, Michael P

Be specific please.

My VP2060 without the hard disk was under 80 bucks. The other unit was 99 bucks. In one case I had an 11GB hard disk from a laptop upgrade for the VP2060 so that final cost was 87 bucks (shipping cost...)

The other unit I found a 40 GB laptop drive for 75 bucks. So that unit totaled out at 188 or so since I shipped it faster.

What downside is there to these devices?

Remember I owned 2 and gave the VP2060 away so if there is a problem, I'd like to know about it.
