Storage Dilema with USB 1.1

May 1, 2005 12:53PM PDT

I have a 4.5gb laptop and obviously need more space than that to store my image files from my 1gb camera. I purchased a burner at best buy figuring I could put all my images on CD. The best buy employee was more than helpful explaining to me that I had 1.1 usb, something I had no idea about, and handed me a $70 burner that supposedly worked with 1.1 usb and Windows 98. After a successful software installation the unit would not work. The company's customer service told me that the burner does not work with 1.1 usb despite its manual and box cover reading otherwise.

So, I need something that I can use to continue to store my ever-growing library of picture files. I assume a burner would be the best/cheapest solution, but if there is a better alternative PLEASE let me know. The other big concern is the compatability with my 1.1USB and win 98. If someone were able to recommend a product that would solve this problem and meet my system requirements, I would be EXTREMELY appreciative. Thanks for reading my post and responding.

My system specs below:

Dell Inspiron 3700 Laptop
Microsoft Windows 98
CD-Rom Dive
400 Celeron
192 mb Ram
USB 1.1

I still need something. Any good deals out there or particular products I might find on ebay easily?

May be a deadend. Here's why.

Just like Windows 95, I'm seeing fading support for 98. That's 98 and not 98se.

It's not funny that some drivers are working only on 98se and not 98 (without the se.)

The difference is subtle, but important. I've made up a few CDRW USB drives from parts from newegg.com and compgeeks.com and they work, but it's unsure for 95/98.

Should work. But.

But many run into USB port issues. For instance better than 1/2 of Windows owners don't know that Microsoft doesn't supply motherboard drivers (which cause the USB ports to work properly.)

Remember that USB CDRW drives did exist and still do, but given your track record I can't state what will work, just that it should work.
