General discussion

storage and power in remote areas

Nov 17, 2006 10:51PM PST

I am to return to the Amazon and would like to record my trip with still and movie images. Most of the places I shall visit will have no electricity to recharge camera or image storage devices. I can take along disposable batteries or even solar rechargers. Anyone with any advice or experience in this area?
If I can find a decent camera that uses disposable batteries and a similar storage device for the images, I am sure that would be a solution.

Isn't this one reason film is still king out there?

Have you noticed that? No batteries required, better performance in low light, more pixels than your high end digitals and more.

I think you need to go back to film.

If you have access to an auto, use it's lighter plug to help recharge. Of course you got to find an adapter for such, but all auto lighters put out 12VDC and take it from there. Whenever possible take extra batteries with you as back-up. The choice of a camera itself will help and go more for the basic rather than extremes as that takes more power. Visit or google for better camera sources and see what they offer. I don't use digital too much other than what's given to me. Yeah, i still use film, its a 100yr. technology but it works well. Make sure you place batteries in protective bags and/or use silica(desenat) pacs to help protect against humidity and if possible use gold(plated) contact point batteries.
