Having a backup means to have your data stored in at least two different physical locations, which you could do manually or by using some backup software/system image. There are even some backup strategies, my favorite one being the so called 3-2-1 backup strategy which stands for 3 copies, 2 different storage mediums and 1 offsite.
Just keep in mind that moving data from your internal drive to an external hard drive is not a backup, unless there is already a duplicate of the file on a different drive.
