How do I stop Firefox from updating itself without my consent? I'm comfortable with an earlier version, and every time it does it I have to uninstall it and install the earlier version again.

it says in the update history that the updates were installed on december 31, 1969
What version Firefox are you running? Firefox > Help > About Firefox.
Any other problems with this computer, eg time and date?

I had a look at my update history:
3.6.6 installed 1-1-1970 1:00
3.5.8 installed 1-1-1970 1:00
3.5.7 installed 16-1-2010 15:58
3.0.17 installed 1-1-1970 1:00
3.0.16 installed 1-1-1970 1:00
and so on
How is it with you? All perfect? If not and you're concerned about it, why not file a bug with Mozilla? It obviously is.
I'd never looked here. It was instructive to see how to disable those automatic updates (although I won't).

My Firefox update history looks like this;
3.6.4 installed 23 June 2010 19:51:44
3.6.3 installed 02 April 2010 11:50:03
3.6.2 installed 23 March 2010 20:02:116
Nothing before 2010 and certainly no 1970 or 1969 dates
But my Vista was reinstalled soon after the new year, so perhaps that makes a difference.
I assume Firefox dates are incorrect in some cases.

but about a month ago, the fan on the processor died, fried my video card, and my "C" drive died, so I had to reinstall everything.
Right now, I've got 3.5.10
I've still got XP, but I'll probably change to 7 before long.
everything else is running better, but the earlier version of Firefox seemed to work better for dial-up
