...step by step.

Alright, first I tried the following:

2. Click on 'Tools' in the upper left, choose 'Options'.
--No problem
3. Click on the 'Preferences' tab, then UNCHECK the box next to 'Run this program when Windows starts'.
-- NO SUCH OPTION??

4. UNCHECK the box next to 'Allow this program to run in the background'.
-- DONE. YET, IT SEEMED TO CHECK ITSELF AGAIN

the permanent measures seemed like it would take out MSN Messenger too. Noooo. I want MSN Messnger, not Windows Messenger.

Javi, In Addition...Stop Messenger From Signing In
May 23, 2005 7:45AM PDT

Follow the instructions provided by Kees to stop Windows Messenger from loading. But because MSN Messenger may be automatically signing in at start up, the instructions below may also be necessary:

Disable Automatic Sign-In With MSN Messenger
Have you tried???

1. Open msn messenger
2. Go to Tools --> Options --> General.... and disable "Automatic sign in when connected to internet"

And if you're using WinXP...

To prevent MSN Messenger from automatically signing in using a registered Microsoft Passport account: click the Start button -> click Run... -> type: control userpasswords2 -> hit Enter or click OK -> click Advanced tab -> select Manage Passwords -> delete all Passport entries -> click OK/Apply.
Then run MSN Messenger -> sign in -> type your passport, e-mail address and password -> uncheck the "Sign me in automatically" box -> save your settings and close MSN Messenger.

Have you tried opening Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Content tab, "Autocomplete" button, UNCHECK "User Names and Passwords"?

..Shoot which Messenger?

After running Shoot the Messenger it says the service is still disabled yet Windows Messenger still opens upon startup.

Javi, you posed a good question...
Jun 4, 2005 10:36PM PDT

There are in fact two Windows Messenger's and you have disabled one that in all probability should be disabled. Now to the other Windows Messenger (Instant Messenger) that you wish disabled so it does not conflict with MSN Messenger (Instant Messenger). There are more ways than one to disable Windows Messenger (Instant Messenger) so I will give you my method... probably not the best way but works for me. Maybe a real techie will chime in and give a better way. Here is mine... In Windows Explorer go to ''Program Files'' and locate the ''messenger'' folder... then rename it to something else which is ''messenger {disabled}'' in my case. Then Windows Messenger (Instant Messenger) will not startup when your system is booted. This works for me and you can always reverse the change if so desired by renaming ''messenger'' folder to it's original name.

Hope this helps.

Why not go to Control Panel> add/remove> add/remove windows components> click on windows messenger check box? Worked for me, and I use MSN messenger 7.0 constantly and happily.
