stop 0xca blue screen, cannot boot

Aug 7, 2011 3:25PM PDT

I am unable to boot my computer as it hangs before the point I could try to enter safe mode. I get the BSOD with error message 0x000000CA, which means PNP_detected_fatal_error, when I try to boot from the Windows XP reinstallation disk that came with the machine (Dell Inspiron E1705 with Media Center, running Windows XP SP3).
I get the same error message when I try to boot Windows on CD using UBCD4Win software, or when I try to start the machine using the Media Center button. I am able to boot Windows on CD using Active@Boot Disk Trial software.
I have removed whatever viruses I could find with Kaspersky and Sophos SAV32CLI, but my ability to run software on this computer is pretty limited. At least my files are all backed up elsewhere. I would rather not have to wipe everything out anyway.
I found Virus Agent-SQZ, which I seem to have acquired the last time my PC ran properly. It infected Java 6 files and Temp files.
More info: Stop 0x000000CA with Parameter 1 = 0x1 lists cause of error as Duplicate PDO: A specific instance of a driver has enumerated multiple PDOs with identical device ID and unique IDs. I did not install any new hardware or software recently. Currently I am unable to reinstall my drivers. All diagnostics pass except that I get the message that the scan cannot identify the Dell Diagnostic Utility Partition.

Get your files out of the machine then

Start fresh. Delete the partitions and start again. Whatever is on the HDD looks to be creating issues.
