General discussion

Stoopid newbie question, but someone please help

Nov 5, 2006 4:36AM PST

I'm using a Power PC G4, running 10.4.8.

I just got it back from Apple extended warranty service.

I use Entourage for my mail.

A friend sent me a "share" from Rhapsody.

It won't play.

First message says incompatible OS. That's just wrong.

Then message says to turn off pop up blocker or adjust managmenet settings to allow from www.rhapsody.com and/or play.rhapsody.com.

I've tried help and can't find a path through it.

I have a thick Tiger OS book and can't find a path, due to lack of key words to my manner of thinking, to changing/managing pop up blocker settings or some useful variation thereof.

Anyone with a little pity for me?

Rhapsody

When you went to the Rhapsody site, did it ask you to install something?

If not, go to www.rhapsody.com and click on the play button for the featured playlist.
That will trigger something an ask you to install the Rhapsody player.
It is a very quick download and once you have downloaded and installed it, things should play for you

OK

by clicking to play it takes me to rhapsody online.

The basic message is "A pop-up blocker has prevented the Rhapsody Online Web Player from opening.

The "click here" to play your music brings up their Incompatible OS message that says for Mac I need 10.3.9 or higher. Certainly 10.4.8 is higher.

The "or get help" on how to make this easier next time leads to Pop Up Blocker Help which has examples or Yahoo! Toolbar, for Internet Explorer and says I can temporarily disable the pop-up blocker by holding down shift or ctrl & view the player. Don't know about "view the player."

In my stumbling about I did come across a Rhapsody Player Engine installer. I installed. After that what? Still doesn't play. Attempting to still gets me the "Incompatible" message.

I'm apparently missing something simple but opaque to me.

That's not quite what I said
Nov 5, 2006 8:52AM PST

did you actually install the software or did you just download it?

Do NOT click on that link in the email. Go to www.rhapsody.com and follow the previous instructions.

Also, email me the link to my Profile address

We're still not on the same wavelength

I went direct to Rhapsody, trying to sign on they said I already had an account. Free trial accounts are for 14 days only. I still couldn't get signed on. Considering paying after the initial 14 days, I'll just forget about it. I don't need it.

Additionally, I'm such a technophobe I can neither figure out what link you're referring to nor what is your Profile address.

Thanks anyway, mrmacfixit.

Between your direction, my reply & your "That's not quite what I said", I don't even know the essence of what you said, is.

You don't need an account

Go to www.rhapsody.com and on their home page you will see four tabs.
Click on the one that says Play.
In the center of the screen you will see a section entitled, "In the Spotlight"
Currently the playlist is "Moby's Master Mix"
Click the Play button.

What happens?

I went in, clicked play & the message comes up about

"Incompatible OS"

& again, the detail is that one needs 10.3.9 or higher

I run 10.4.8.

Interesting

I am running the same as you and the message I got was about installing the player for OS X.

I know this may sound ridiculous, but go to the System Profiler and confirm that OS 10.4.8 is actually installed. I'm sure it is but you did say that your machine has been away for something.

Next, go to Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions on the HD.

Then, restart your machine and after the chime hold down the Apple Key + Option + P + R. You must hold them all down before you see the grey screen. Keep them down until you hear the chime for a second time.

Try Rhapsody again

I think you may be trying to install the Rhapsody software and NOT the Rhapsody Player.

The Rhapsody software is for Windows only and does NOT have a Mac equivalent. I wonder if this is the cause of error message about incompatible OS.

The only requirement for the Player software is that you have a machine with:
Quote
Rhapsody Player Engine Plug-in Minimum System Requirements - Mac
G3 Mac OSX compatible processor
256MB of RAM
2MB available disk space
16-bit sound card and speakers
Unquote

Note that there is no mention of any version of OS X.

I'll download the Player Software for you and, if you set your profile to receive email, I'll send it to you.

How's that?
