Still yet another additional ....

Hello Everyone,

Yes, 'tis survey time again, I suppose?

What with the World goin' to the proverbial H e double hockey sticks in a wicker container, or maybe not, but sometimes it feels like it, I think it's time for another food question.

Anyone here like horseradish? It's perhaps strange, but I found out (the hard way!) that I'm probably allergic to the stuff, though other "hot" stuff doesn't affect me the same way. Not only does the horseradish taste really funky (bad) to me, but I get a sort of hive reaction on my face, neck, etc, if I get some by accident.

Anyhow, just wondering, I guess it's a matter of taste, but in some cases one has to be careful - just as more people seem to be allergic to tree nuts, MSG, or whatever, kids nowadays seem to suffer from asthma more than they used to. ? I've read a bit about the subject online and in rather brief newspaper articles, and some docs are leaning towards a "too clean environment" hypothesis.

I really love Mexican food - Tex-Mex and "authentic" - and consume quite a bit of hot sauce such as Tabasco, Cholula, what-have-you, and used to like 'Vindiloo' (sp?) curry, but that's some way powerful crap and the ole stomach is no longer 'cast iron' anymo. Happy

So, who likes horseradish? And on what?

Hi Mark,

My 'episode' was a oyster sauce - man I thought I was gonna die! Although I like fresh fish occasionally, one gets "spoiled" when you can get really good stuff in Galvezton, or better yet catch 'em yerself. :^)In the bay "speckled" trout (saltwater) used to be safe(ish) ? but mebbe high in Mercury nowadays. We also caught "Golden croakers" and would fry those guys up too - not as tasty as the trout, but pretty good eating.

Yep, like horseradish and Mexican food with plenty of hotsauce. I have had to slow down on the hot stuff, my stomach isn't as young as it once was.

My Dad loved the stuff. Right out of the jar. I couldn't stand the taste, and it burned my mouth!

But a few years ago a friend made a German beef sandwich that called for a sauce with some horseradish in it, and it was good.

Then my daughter sent some Alaskan smoked salmon (she then lived in Alaska). It was in small cans. Some recipes were included. As I was having a party, I thought the one for a dip would spread it around. It consisted of cream cheese, green onions, and a little horseradish. Go-o-o-d!

So, I reckon I am not allergic to it, but can't stand it alone.

The first time I ate Tex-Mex was in Mew Mexico in '92. It was stupendous! Really turned me on to fajitas.

I like guacamole, gazpacho, jalapenos, and, of course, salsa.

As to the seemingly increase in allergies, asthma, etc., I have my own theories. I am concerned about the use of antibiotics and hormones in our meat as culprits. Also the pesticides. I haven't seen a honey bee for years, and only one garden spider.

I grew up when coal was used to heat homes. But there weren't as many cars. I do know that we can over-"sterilize: our skin. And that there are times we could let our bodies heal themselves and build up immunities. But I still vote for clean air! Happy

Sorry for the late reply. My Mom made a mean gazpacho, borscht,too. Mmmmmm - but then she also loved cabbage - sauerkraut, which I reallly dislike, something about the smell. Oh well. She was Polish/Russian, dang near 'old country' :^) ; born in '29 in Detroit, her folks came here around 1910.

I seem to 'member something about dirt being rather beneficial to immunity when one is a kid - and if kept too clean, just as with measles,etc ya can dang near die later in life from the stuff one shrugs off as a youngster. And an article about dogs/ dander something like that also helping. Not sure about other pets. Anyway, so nice to be reminded of cold soup - although Sis doesn't much like to make it, it's pretty easy. Dad used to add a bit of blood to his version of borscht, which kinda freaked Mom out, she liked everything red meat to be totally well done, so he would 'sneak it' into mine and Victoria's.

Fajitas are oohh so good with the proper seasoning/marinade. Worcestershire/soy/ anything like that is a good base. And not all that bad for ya fat wise - usually pretty lean stuff. Here in Texas they genarally use flank steak, cut on the 'bias'.

horseradish paste pretty much known as wasabi on sushis with some pickled ginger.

I like almost all types of radishes prepared in varieties of recipes preferrably the Asian and Middle Eastern way.

Beef Vindaloo - meat, bones, tendons, spicy hot hot chili peppers, garam masala, ginger, bay leaves, simmered down to a thick sauce. One of my favorite Indian food.

Mexican food would be -- nachos with refried beans, lots of cheese and jalapenos, chimichanga and menudo


...but I think, I'll have a small bowl of old fashioned oatmeal with lots of maple syrup in it for supper tonight. Wink

Hi Diana,

I find eating uncalculated amount of wasabi makes me cry (kindda embarrassing) and I feel fire coming out of my ears, sniff! Sniff! too. I agree it's good.

Did you know, that wasabi are used in the film industry by actors -- to make them cry apart from vicks and chili peppers?

That's interesting - used to be they'd use gelatin or sumthin that looked fakey - too thick as compared to real tears.

BTW, another bit 'o trivia - Katharine Hepburn once cried, for real, on cue, for four separate 'takes' for a Cukor film. Man, what a doll she was, smart, beautiful and one heck of a nice person, too. Four Oscars, twelve nominations - only Meryl Streep got more. "The Lion in Winter" is probably my fave film of hers - Peter O'Toole does a dang good acting job in that too. Happy

Though I like prime rib, it's not my fave 'cut'. Those little bacon-wrapped filets one can get in two-packs are probably No. One choice, though as such they are so tasty just by themselves no sauce of any kind is needed. Perhaps a bit of black pepper, garlic chunks, that's all. Happy Wow, it's almost lunchtime, right? Well, here it is. :^)
