Still using Win98?

Jun 12, 2006 12:44PM PDT

Hey, on today's (June 12th) podcast you were asking how many people are still running Win98. Well...I still have it installed on an older laptop that occasionally sees use in the living room when my wife needs to be away from her desktop. Yeah, it's not like I'm going to share my laptop. I keep saying that I'm going to reformat the hard drive and load it up with open source OS and software, but I never seem to find the time.

Cheers,
Steve

I have 2 computers....
Jun 12, 2006 1:05PM PDT

One of the computers in my bedroom (I'm 12) is 9 years old!!! Almost as old as I am! and it's been upgraded over the years but still runs Windows 98, the other computer is much more powerful and runs windows XP, but I use xp for tasks I cannot do on the 98 box, such as programs that suck up memory. The 98 box is there basically to surf a single web page at a time.... I just replied to this topic using a 98 computer! LOL!

Still have a half a dozen 98 machines
Jun 12, 2006 1:14PM PDT

We have some machines that run 98 as 2k didn't have the supprt for all we needed. We upgraded anything with more than 64Meg of ram to ME.

As machines get replaced they get XP.

But then again these are not on the net, But we see a lot of 98 machines in use.

98SE and Me are still common, work well and a lot of the students we see here still use them.

I even saw a 95 machine a few days ago. But that was getting a little silly. It was a P100 16Meg of ram and a 540 meg HDD - Screen backlight failed, and they wondered if it was worth getting it fixed.

I gave them a not economic to repair tag for free and sent them home, I just felt so sorry for them.

busted backlight

You could have replaced the cold cathode tube on the back of the display, it can be a REAL PITA, but since the display is already busted, i'd have given it a try.

Still have 95
Jun 12, 2006 1:59PM PDT

We have a machine that still runs Windows 95 in the basement. I turned it on a while ago and the only app on it is Roller Coaster Tycoon.. It's ridiculous to think I used to be overjoyed to have my own computer that ran 95.

we don't, but our neighbors do
Jun 12, 2006 11:56PM PDT

Our neighbors sometimes call me to help them out of difficulties with their excruciatingly ancient Win 98 machine. It has no USB nor does it have an ethernet port. I think they've had it about as long as I've had my youngest child (now in 2nd grade).

To be totally honest, the child mentioned above does have a win 98 machine in his bedroom. Last time he tried to use it (well over a year ago), it kept giving him error messages. We stole the speakers from it when our big HP monitor with the built-in speakers died. Guess we should put it in the basement, huh?

I caught my parents using it.
Jun 13, 2006 12:21AM PDT

My father said the computer was fine and wasn't hesitant to upgrade. However, my father is the type of person who doesn't like to own the same car for more than 5 years. So when I put it into perspective that his computer and OS was more than 8 years old, it didn't take him long to let me order him a new computer.

All in the family..
Jun 13, 2006 10:24PM PDT

I have an cousin who has a computer that still has Windows ME and another aunt who has a computer with Windows 98. Both of which needs to be wiped and reformatted (and upgraded as much as possible). Haven't had the time to go do them. Both also just got DSL within the last month or two. I was going to get a router for them(especially the ME one) in the meantime, but then I thought, why bother?

More problems with XP
Jun 14, 2006 5:51AM PDT

Most net nasties nowadys are using XP , Sasser and blaster are XP problems.

XP not only has more problems, but it also is what most software is targeting.

Yes you can click and install malware for 98 and ME, but the firewall is more important than the OS.

I thought I was alone in this experience until I heard Steve Gibsomn from Security Now discussing the WMF exploit/Backdoor and he mantioned that it also might affect 89/ME "WHICH HE RECOMMENDED TO NEWBIES AS IT WAS MORE SECURE !!!" I have mentioned this to Friends who do Tech support work for Redmond and while they cant say so, they nod in agreement.

SP2 fixed a lot not because its more secure, but because it addefd a firewall.

I know there will be a huge reaction to this, but if ME/(* is working for them, Forget the "UPGRADE" and install firewalls and such.

If they have DSL, get an old PC, install IPCOP and build them a secure firewall/router behind which windows will be safe.

At home I have 3 firewalls. even with my wife and Kids using any of 13 different machines we remain virus free. And with IPCOP I have logs of every site they visit. So they know that I know where they Go and they Know where I go. So we stay away from the sites that are likely to try to infect my box.

Firewall first . Worry about OS issues later.

... I'll go and don my asbestos suit now while the MS zealots et out the flamethowers. ... Remember I only do this stuff all day for my Job. I am the IT guy here in the lab. Where I am pleased to report our only downtime records are windows rebooting after patch tuesdays.

about 75% of our school district uses it. also, we use NO antispyware, but a weak, outdated eTrust antivirus

You name it, we got it!
Jun 14, 2006 9:32AM PDT

I work for a Window manufacturing plant (actual windows that go in the middle of a wall, not the OS). I'm the IT guy and have had days where I wished everything was running XP. But alas, we have every version (except Windows 3.x) of Windows on at least one or more computers and even have a few machines on the production floor that are running DOS. Even the majority of the managers on the production floor are running either 98 or ME (which I loathe!).

Bank uses ME!
Jun 14, 2006 11:32AM PDT

The bank that I work at has their entire system on ME, we process all transactions and everything on ME.. and I'd say on average, we have to restart them about 5-6 times a day.

98? What about 3.1?
Jun 15, 2006 9:06AM PDT

At my office, we have a Windows 3.1 machine that exists solely to scan and print invoices that were archived to microfische. We have an IBM PC/XT (I think, but it's definitely from the IBM PC line) machine running DOS that exists solely to pull and print invoices that were archived to WORM media. Neither of these machines are connected to the internet, but it's interesting to know that when the WORM drive we had went out, my giant mega-corporation actually had to scour eBay and other small electronics shops to find a replacement.
