still need answer for dvd-1080p8 issue - hd tech

Feb 26, 2009 8:45PM PST

How can i keep the display setting
to 1080i? It keeps reverting back
to (auto)(1080p). I change the setting
to (manual)(1080i). Once i put the disc
in and push play, reverts back to (auto)
(1080p). Dvd player is connected to ln32a450
(720p) with hdmi and anynet+. Need help
because this tv doen't like 1080p (slight
snow). However my ln32a540(720p) has no
problems with the 1080p input from player.

Output settings..

The output settings should stay when they're in manual mode.

I'm looking into this, but I'm not sure why it's reverting back to 1080p either.

thanks for looking into this - samsung hd tech
Mar 2, 2009 8:44PM PST

I've posted a couple of times about
this problem and it's gone unresponsive.
I don't think there are too many owners
here that have my setups. If the firmwares
would list what they're fixing i would try
it but don't really want to do it if this is
the only issue. I've tried all the scenarios
like turning anynet+ off, unplugging, different
hdmi cable, etc. but with no success. Can live
with but would have liked to see more plug and
play with minimal adjustments. Thanks.

got answer from samsung

Apparently the hdmi connection is the culprit.
Was told if i were to use component connection
i would be able to retain manual setting. Don't
plan on changing cables, will live with. Minor
inconvenience, extra button push, on 1 setup.
1st time owning 1080p upconverting dvd player.
I wander if the other brands have the same issue.

hd tech - any answers from your end?
Mar 17, 2009 12:52AM PDT

I'm still curious about the issues with the ln32a450
(noise/slight snow) when receiving the 1080p signal.
What makes the ln32a540 compatable but not the ln32a450?

mamontano,

I wish I had an answer. Both panels are 720p, so I'm trying to figure out why the player itself would revert itself up to 1080p. The upconverting player has the ability to upscale DVDs, but I think they'd look better being:

480 > upscaled to 720 > sent via HDMI > 720p television

rather than:

480 > upscaled to 1080p > sent via HDMI > downconverted back to 720.

There may be something in that conversion process that isn't handling the downscaling correctly, but I'm not sure what it might be. Since both TVs are 720p, I'd think the best way to deliver the signal to the television is in the native resolution.

recommended setting for dvd player

So if the player would hold it's setting you
recommend setting it to 480 or 720 for optimal picture
quality? I've heard keeping the setting at 1080i or p
and letting the hdtv downconvert it to its native 768.
Not sure what's the best. I probably won't be able to
tell much of a difference anyway but i'd like to go with
what's recommended.

Thanks,
Mike

mamontano,

Technically, it would be wise to pump in the highest resolution and let the television downconvert the signal. In textbook logics, this would be ideal - you are correct. However, real life situations can vary based on the upconversion and downconversion process. If this causes snow, then that's obviously not the optimal way to watch.

I did try to find information on the firmware update, and found this on the website:
If you own a DVD-1080p8 manufactured between April and June of 2008 and a 550 series Samsung LCD TV such as the LN40A550, and you are not getting a signal from the DVD player to the TV through HDMI you may have a firmware issue.

I'll check tomorrow to see if this issue is happening elsewhere, and if the firmware might actually fix this.

i'll check for manufacture dates

The ln32a450 is the one receiving snow with 1080p signal
from the dvd-1080p8. I see there are firmware updates for
both of these devices but no readme.txt type file specifying
what the updates fix. I'll hold off on any firmware updates
until i know what they specifically fix. No issues with ln32a540 (costco)receiving 1080p signal from dvd-1080p8. Was very happy about that. Thanks for looking into this for me. As they say, "curiuosity
killed the cat".

Here's what the firmware updates
Mar 24, 2009 1:11PM PDT

mamontano,

Here's what the firmware updates, as per the webste;

build date : 2008-07-23 LCD TV LN 450 series Firmware

This firmware will correct the following phenomenons some units may experience.
-. TV freeze when Auto programming, shows abnormal channel number or skip some channels

-. The volume will not go up or down
-. Intermittent No Audio with HDMI connection

The firmware will be updated to the following version.
-. LN**A450C1D : 1013.3

Please be sure to read the instruction before beginning the update process.

If you go to the support page and type in the model, go under the firmware tab, you can find this information by clicking the text of the firmware (instead of the file on the right)

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the heads up. If i start experiencing these problems
i'll do the update. I'll go check and see what the updates are
for the dvd-1080p8.

about the snow
Nov 25, 2009 10:03PM PST

This might sound dumb or obvious but i'm no tech whiz. I own the LN32A450 and had snow issues. I have a Logitech Z-2300 2.1 speaker setup and a Samsung BD-P1500 and had some of the wires hanging over the BD player and a satellite speaker sitting on the BD player itself. Stupid, right? The picture looked horrible while playing BD. Static and noise and snow. I removed the speaker and the wires from the BD player and it was like i had bought a new TV. So in short, you might be having EM or some other kind of noise interference. Or dirty electricity. You could look into getting a line conditioner, or a "power management center", or a surge protector/line conditioner.
