Steweee, help I'm stressing over speakers!

Hi Stewee, as I've written, I'm getting a new TV, but I'm also getting new speakers as my old Advent Pro monitors are too big for the area in the new house. What I need is something no wider than 10". The Room where it's going is huge, but the place where the TV and sound system is going is very limited. It's one of those built in areas that builders are putting in houses now. I don't need a reciever as I already have one. I'm looking to spend between $500 and $1000, (prefer closer to $500) for 5.1 speaker system. Satellites are OK, but so many of them don't have a full presence. The towers that I've listened to sound much better. Any suggestions from anyone would be appreciated.

TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK, YOU'LL NEVER BE happy with someone else's choice,
speakers are such a subjective component. Stewee will push Atlantic....somethings. GO OUT AND AUDITION ON YOUR OWN, I'm not trying to be rude, but remember neither Stew nor I will ever hear your set-up. YOU ARE THE ONE WHO HAS TO LISTEN TO IT EVERYDAY!!!

Some brands to check out include KLIPSCH, POLK, BOSTON ACOUSTIC, JBL, MIRAGE, AXIOM, OHM, and NHT. Some are mass-market others are DIRECT-BUY systems.

Lots of good advice on this forum, but speakers have to be your decision alone.

Best shopping,

ack! what the heck happened to my post?

In reply to: Steweee, help I'm stressing over speakers!

left a decent effort, as Ive actually seen your posts here. First concern that hits me is dispersion issues, but I have no idea what the heck your "built-in room" is. Ah well, even blamed Bill for my altrustic tendencies for impossible speaker threads. Ill cut to the chase, budget is tough for what you want. Try bookshelves, and/or cutting out some part of the package. 5.1? Has to be htib, which no one here recommends outside of pure financial constraints. You may look at av123 x-series, but their sub won't cut it in a huge room.

Tall slim towers will probably eat your budget up real fast (hence the bookshelf rec). These run roughly 1k for the pair, Mirage Omnisat v2 towers and Paradigm Millennia 200's.

OK, I agree with everybody so far.

Stewee is happy with his set of speakers. I am happy with my Paradigms. Josten in the middle of thinking his Martin Logans are better than sex.

I'd guess NHTs are too expensive for your budget. To Rivs list I'd add Paradigm, PSB, EDbergy, Epos & Monitor Audio. Rivs mentioned brands are the most widely distributed. Look for what is available for you to select from.

Trust your instincts with like an hour listen each with a CD you are very familiar with. Don't take your credit cards to avoid impulse. I liked one posters rationale of start with lowest priced to audition, work your way up until the extra money is not decidedly superior. Dang, that's good thinking. Only dificult by way of havng the info to organize the listening that way.

Anyway, there are some oh so pleasing values out there among such models as Paradigm Atom, PSB Alpha B or step up to PSB Image T55, Epos ELS3, Energy RC-50, & Monitor Audio Bronze B. They are so darned good at affordable prices.

The direct sales brands Aperion & Axiom have much to offer, too. Yep, no listening room is the same as your listening space. And even if I were your best friend & you gave the grand, the set I thought best would be my opinion, not yours.

I agree that listening is subjective.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions on speakers. I agree that listening is very subjective, but it's been 20 years since I've looked at and listened to speakers and things have changed a lot during that time. I'm not looking for the best speakers on the market, but I do want some good sound after being spoiled by my Advent pro monitors for the last 20 years. By the way the stressing out part was tongue in cheek, referring to a earlier post by Stewee. The devil in me just couldn't resist the title. Happy
Once again, Thanks
