Step by step needed please

Feb 7, 2004 3:05PM PST

I want to add to my safety site, with setup steps for the main free protection programs. Since I no longer use these, and don't want to wreck my finely tuned computer with temp installs just to see them, I'd be grateful if people could provide the installation/best settings for these, nad any caveats/bugs they may have.

Sygate Personal firewall
ZoneAlarm Free firewall
Avast! Free AV
AVG Free AV
MailWasher Free edition

I know there are others, but these are hte ones I recommend for visitors, as they are long-time proven and reliable. I can handle the Spybot and AdAware procedures myself. Thanks in advance for the assist. Happy

Hi, Dale,

I'm sorry I can't help you, but I'm sure anyone who can will jump in.

You might also consult the Virus and Security forum.

You mentioned you understandably don't want to mess up your PC. So, I can contribute a caveat....

Last week I installed the new version of a suite I had used without any problems. I took good care of pre-installing measures - even closing all programs running in the background. But Live Update would not connect.

Finally I had to call the fee-based tech support, who took me through a clean install (removing all vestiges of earlier programs.) All is working fine now except there are some minor problems. Don't laugh, but I play solitaire a lot. But now it will allow only one game, not responding after that. There are also a couple other errors in dll.exe that cause some conflicts. Still, the firewall, AV, ad and popup blocking work fine.

Good luck!

By the mention of Live Update, I;m guessing it's Nortan? If so, they have now released a fix to the problem many have had since updating to v.2.0 of the module. Run Live Update (sic) to get it. Wink

Thanks, Dale,

Yep- it is Norton's.

I had v. 2002, and the one I just installed is v. 2004.

The solitaire problem is a "known" one, but using add/remove re: games did not work.(It causes an error in KRNL 386.)

I have Live Update on auto, but run it manually, as well. Just did a couple hours ago.

Do you know if it would work if I had my son make a floppy of his solitaire, and I could install it in another location?

Windows Me has not given me any problems. So, could I re-install just the games from the Windows Me CD?

Re: NAV 2004
Feb 8, 2004 8:19AM PST

I'd heard of that, Angeline, as well as of another bug that requires that NAV 2004 be uninstalled in order for the user to do a 100% backup of the PC. Needless to say, I'll stick with NAV 2003 for now.

For whatever reason, this sort of thing seems distressingly common with Symantec products. They do a great job - once the bugs are exterminated. That's why I NEVER upgrade any Symantec product for at least 6 months after the release of a new version.

As for the Solitaire issue: If NAV 2004 is causing a kernel problem, then removing/reinstalling the Games module in WinME may not solve the issue, but I suppose it's worth a try. Try using the "Add/Remove Windows components" function to remove it, then to add it back in (alas, I no longer remember where the (expletive deleted) that is after 14 months of using WinXP). Wink

Download them from the MS updates site
Feb 9, 2004 8:45AM PST

MS made the four pre-XP games available as a separate download at Windows Updates some time ago. Use the Product Updates Library at the page to seek them out if they don't show in your updates scan. Happy

Also, with AVG, if you want to manually update, do some from the task bar and not from the desktop icon.

I use Symantec and Zone Alarm Pro
Feb 8, 2004 8:03AM PST

I don't think it pays to save money here. Both automaticaaly update themselves as necessary. I don't really have to think about it.

Symantec is simple. Install and forget. It'll let you know it's there if it sees something it doesn't like. Zone Alarm asks whether such and such a program should access the local net or internet. If you are running something for which web access is reasonable, say Yes. If you recognize that the program is legit, say Yes. Otherwise say No. It also blocks access to your computer. If you know where the access came from, you can declare it a trusted site. Otherwise, let ZA do its thing.

I only use zone alarm of those, and it's been too long to remember step by step, Sorry

Thanks Ed. I will take a look, though there is a purpose behind sitcking with the free ones. The site as you know targets young people, so the idea is to highlight nil cost protection so it is within their allowance. You know as I do that with teens and kids, if it's a choice between buying protection and getting the latest CD or PS2 game, the serious software loses. Wink
