Status of threads... unread, read & new reply color coding

May 18, 2006 7:07AM PDT

is unreliable and inaccurate. It's unbelievable that forums are in such a state of confusion and disrepair with all kinds of rampant problems that do not get fixed or else more are created when attempts are made! It may be the software is beyond repair? Sad

Sorry folks... but this is becoming too much of a pain!

I know...
May 18, 2006 9:36AM PDT

Just be glad that you didn't go through the eye of the storm...for a few days every thread and every post turned up the Cnet 404, making it impossible for me to read or post. It began last Friday after everyone had gone home, so I was stuck. Lee put a rush on it, and I was able to return Tuesday evening. I'm appreciative just to post!

I haven't had any 404s since Tuesday, but the post markings are still off for me too...I've read a select group of posts a few dozen times and they're still being marked as unread. I know a week or two ago Lee said the engineers had come up with a patch and would implement it shortly, but I think their watch stopped. Sad I know they're busy with bigger issues, such as the one that knocked me out of commission, but it's hard to believe after a month or so they haven't gotten around to it. It seems like bug fixes are being pushed to the Wish List, and the desired changes being pushed to the Recycle Bin. Sad

Read/Unread
Aug 10, 2006 8:36AM PDT

LOL, hopefully they don't empty the bin too soon. This is my first visit to this thread but when I scrolled down the list it shows all but the last 6 posts as being read??? This also happens in all the forums/threads I have been to, always shows a lot as being read, but they have not been. No C|net 404 recently anywaySilly

There's a 30-day limit...
Aug 10, 2006 12:18PM PDT

There's actually a 30-day limit in effect where posts more than a month old are automatically marked as read regardless of whether they have been read by the member or not. This is because the system must remember all posts that have been read by each and every member, so having it assume that posts over 30 days old as read drastically reduces the length of that list. I'm actually composing an e-mail to Lee on that subject, though, in regards to forum issues we're all experiencing.

Well, I mark all discussions read
Aug 10, 2006 2:02PM PDT

Well, I mark all discussions read before I leave each forum I visit. I can go back and and find some unread, red dots partway down the page, gray ones in between. It's not working the way it did in April 2006. I also found out that the ones with (NT) are not marking read and hang in there. If this were fixed, the forums would be happier again.

That should be fixed next month...
Aug 10, 2006 3:28PM PDT

I've been complaining about it in spurts myself, and while they haven't been able to get it fixed yet they expect the problem to be resolved in the migration to the new servers and updated software. If all goes according to plan that would be sometime next month after a short beta test to minimize the ripple effect we've felt in previous releases. To borrow from what I've been told, 'just hang in there, help is on the way.'

Thank you, John.

I though Glenda broke them for good.

Must have something to do with the garlic

OK, the 30 day limit makes a bit of sense?
Aug 11, 2006 4:50AM PDT

When I first logged on today however, there were no icons for the status of messages, read, nor unread.

Yep. I've seen the RED dot for new posts but . . .
May 19, 2006 3:42AM PDT

when the post is actually opened, nothing is NEW.

PudgyOne, didn't review all your links but...
May 19, 2006 10:20PM PDT

I am referring to the color coding dots not being accurate to the extent that one cannot trust them. So you may miss a reply or see a red dot and go there expecting a new reply and find nothing.

Hope this helps!

To go along with
May 20, 2006 12:10AM PDT

what Glenn is saying once inside it tells you that you are on message 6 of 8 and only selection is previous.

There are still messages unread but only way to retrieve is to scroll down and find one you have not read.

Very annoying all this started with lastest upgrade to forum.

This has been reported by various member but not addressed by anyone.

Before I leave
May 20, 2006 7:28AM PDT

Before I leave a forum I use the mark all discussions read function. It then marks them read. I leave the forum and go to the main directory. I then re-enter the forum I just left and the red dots are back with no new posts. Examples are in the ones that I posted earlier.

BUMP!
May 26, 2006 2:01PM PDT

Lee, I don't think the server is responding to your pings any longer. It's been over a month and it still has not been addressed/resolved. (I'm STILL experiencing this problem.) I've been patiently waiting, but it's really getting ridiculous now. If they don't have time to fix the bugs, perhaps we could find out what's keeping them so busy? If the server doesn't show signs of life by the next scheduled update release, I'll start pinging it myself.

Problems persists...
Jun 9, 2006 7:16AM PDT

I keep finding greyed items appearing at the top of the list and out of most recent reply date sequence... upon checking there are replies that I have not read.

So the forums continue to be erroneous and unreliable!

Jun 9, 2006 7:35AM PDT

Well, I think that the forums are doing better. They are better than they were for the past few months. I think you need to keep Sue from breaking the forums.

Just tell Sue NOT to click on the Next and previous buttons when going to the next page in a forum. She might break that function also.

Rick

P.S. Just kidding Sue. As you can see, that function doesn't work properly. Devil
