startup programs

Aug 31, 2010 7:47PM PDT

I have Vista Home Premium which is running well generally but I also run Flight Simulator 9 & 10. Most games seem to run better if there are no other programs running in the background. I know I have some that auto run at startup yet I cannot find a way to stop them. They show on the bottom tool bar and according to the system maintenance page are listed in a All Users Startup Folder. I'm blowed if I can find this folder.
I've tried rt clicking on them but there is no option to close them.
With XP it used to be easy to do this but Vista is different.

We used to have a little program called EndItAll but I believe this doesn't work with Vista

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Barrie

game booster

I use a little program from Iobit called Game Booster; essentially, it shuts down unnecessary tasks running in the background in order for games to run smoothly http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html (you can either allow GB to shut down whatever it's programmed to do, or you configure it to your specifications).

Startup programs and game performance issues

Thanks guys for your help in this. no doubt common knowledge to some but I'm no great computer buff.

The msconfig did the trick of closing some programs I wanted but I'm a bit wary of others that I don't know what they are. I listed 26 programs in my system under the tab quoted.

Thanks also for the Game Booster tip, I will give that a try.

Cheers, Barrie

with Game Booster; all it does is take the guesswork out of trying to decide which 'background services' to stop, while gaming.
