"i have my life on that computer"

Your first duty is to rescue the data off the offending drive. Multiple methods exist:

1) Research and use Knoppix
2) Move the hard drive into a working computer as slave or cable select and drag the files off to the master drive
3) Repair install of XP (could be risky to your data).
4) Where does safe mode get you?

If you are unsure on how to do this

In reply to: Re: startup problem in winxp

any computer repair shop will back up your data from your computer (for a fee, of course).

Money well spent if you're life is on the computer!

I'd back up the data FIRST and then figure out what to do. At worst, once the data is backed up, you can reformat and reinstall, but get the data off!
