Startup chime (minor annoyance)

Sep 13, 2006 6:20AM PDT

So, I have a macbook (2.0 ghz, white) running OS X 10.4.7. My problem is that when starting up with headphones plugged in, I still hear the startup chime wit h the speakers. I looked it up online but it only talks about the same problem with bootcamp (which I don't have or use). I know I can just mute the volume at shutdown but don't want to go through the hassle of unmuting...

Also, I know I can just put it to sleep and avoid this problem, but there are times I just shut it off and with other people sleeping don't want to wake them with the noise (as I use it at night). Any help is appreciated.

WIth the headphones plugged in

the speakers should be muted.
Are you sure that the boot chime that you hear is not coming from the headphones?

I'm completely sure...

I just checked, and the headphones are snug and the chime comes from the speakers. Also, I always have the headphones plugged in for private listening/to not bother others. The only time I hear anything from the speakers is the time when I startup and its the boot chime.

New MacBook Pro chimes with headphones plugged in too!

Mine does the same thing, right out of the box. Very ANNOYING, Apple needs to remedy this in a hurry. I'm actually amazed that they haven't remedied the fact that the volume of the chime at boot is affected by the volume set after OSX is loaded, it's ubsurd to me. Another annoying thing it does is, after installing a bluetooth mouse, my iSight light stays on sometimes even when I'm not using it, and then it doesn't work again until I reset the PMU. I'm more then a little disapointed with Apple right now.

You have, of course,

called Apple Support to ask for a solution to your problem?

Don't forget to get a case number so that you, and they, can track the progress of your problem should it go beyond the warranty period.

The volume of the boot chime has always been governed buy the volume set in sound control panel. Muting the sound will make the chime go away altogether, but that is not a solution to your problem.

Could your BT mouse installation have something to do with your iSight camera staying on? I had the same problem with a Macbook and a reboot cured it.

The same thing happens

with my G5 flatpanel iMac. Even if there are headphones plugged into the headphone jack, if the volume is up the start-up chimes come through the built-in speakers and not the headphones. Before I shut down, I set the volume to nothing.
