Startup(can not find mouse)

Aug 9, 2004 10:58AM PDT

550 PIII , Win98se , 10 GB HDD (8.5 GB free space) , 128 MB mem , IE /OE 6 , AVG anti virus , Sygate firewall ,connected by cable .

I used my mouse and keyboard and then my computer to check out another computer system and then re-setup my system. On startup I got to windows logo after a single "beep"and then the system hung up.I tried CAD and got a warning message "Windows Mouse Support" - Windows did not detect a mouse. You can safely attach a serial mouse now.
This warning is on a blue screen and the arrow cursor is inoperable. After 5 minutes I turned off the computer.
1. I then tried to start with a start up disk made from Ctrl Pnl in Jul. The computer progressed through 3 choices , the first of which was "start with CD ROM support" but I could not make a choice with the arrow keys. After 2 or 3 mins it continued to A:\> with a blinking cursor but I could not type anything.I tried typing Help , clicked on ESC and CAD and after several minutes I shut the computer down
2. I repeated the steps with a startup floppy made through Ctrl Pnl in May but got the same results.
3. I then removed the start up floppy and started up the computer while tapping F8 .This got the same results as 2 and 3 and three above .
4. I can not get to safe mode and I don't know how to format without being able to type something after A:\>.
Any help would be greatly appreciated !

2 ideas.

1. The mouse and keyboard are PS2 and in the wrong connectors.

2. Pull the AC cord, count to 20 and try again.

Bob

PS. And try a new mouse.

I am using 98SE and have about the same problem. I use a cordless mouse. When I tried to defrag (i have to use safe mode) I can get so far and it tells me Windows does not see a mouse. I have tried this a few times and it comes up the same so I have not been able to defrag for a long time. I have defraged since using the cordless mouse so why all of a sudden can't it read the darn mouse?

1. Use the DEFRAG.INF located in the \Tools\MTSutil folder on the Win98 CD, that may be copied to the hard disk if you desire. (For further information, see the Mtsutil.txt file in the same location).

2. For your reading pleasure, "List of Articles About the Disk Defragmentor Tool (Q286263)."

If plug-in mouse, physically check the pins for any bent or push-in pins. Usually, when I see this problem it may go away but usually comes back after a fix with orginal mouse. I just buy a new mouse and the problem doesn't return. If you fiddle with mouse setting or whatnots, make sure to return them to defaults or safe levels when installing new mouse. If you use some cordless mouse, do a proper de-install and then re-install after a reboot and it recognizes new h/w, etc. follow prompts(use kybd). and hopefully you succeed.

good luck -----Willy Happy

Bob and Willy - Thank you so much its working ! I pulled the plug and removed all connections to the back of the computer (everything looked fine)and put it all back and rebooted successfully !!
I need to remember in the future to do the basic things before calling for help !!
