Start up problems

Jul 27, 2007 6:20AM PDT

Using Win XP Home edition, SP2, Pentium 4. On startup I get a screen apologizing for the inconvenience, but "Windows did not start successfully, blah blah". I am given 5 options, safe mode, (with or without networking and/or command prompt), last known good config, or start windows normally. Then the 30sec countdown begins, process starts all over.

When I manage to complete a successful startup the computer may or may not inadvertently reboot. This usually happens when I try to access internet with AOL. A normal shut downs (one that I execute) frequently presents a dialog box pertaining to some program not responding.

I think my problems initially started after a failed download of Adobe Reader 8.

In the past few hours I have done a MS Error-Checking, I have also optomized the hard drive.

Norton Utilities didn't find/resolve my problem.

Hope you have some suggestions.
Thanks, Doug

get rid of tat Norton stuff !......... slows everything down. Norton stuffs work's best with Hp systems. then, if u can get to ur desktop, u shud uninstall the adobe reader and AOL, i'd also recomend running these tools Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor from PC tools Link -> www.pctools.com and also run a check disk.

Now install AOL and Adobe reader.
