start up prob!

Dec 11, 2003 1:14AM PST

Whenever I start up the computer, the desktop and all its programs freeze. Sometimes I get through, by doing a whole bunch of "end tasks" and then everything seems to work find.

Why is it freezing?

"Sometimes I get through, by doing a whole bunch of "end tasks" and then everything seems to work find."

You didn't share what you were end tasking. Let's start with the usual ejection of pests? The five scans and ejecting what is found at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0 is something I'll do as a general practice. If you don't do this, explain why and do tell the forum you didn't so we know.

When i do get through, i performed spybot, adaware, virus scans, and all the norton systemworks functions. None of these fix the problems

I am not able to get through to the internet to download and perform the other "five scans."

Note: I have a firewall, and i contiually get messages asking if "ams" and "wupdater" are attempting to access the internet. I block them, i don't know if thats the right thing to do.

Windows ME and SystemWorks are a toxic brew.

I noted this some years ago at http://www.bugnet.com/alerts/bugalert_010110.html Newer versions never fixed this bug and now you've added more Symantec software.

In short, it's a problem that you'll need to decide why all these softwares are installed and find support for such.

If I wasn't direct enough... You've added something known to be a toxic combination.

I researched the combinations. It seems to only be present when an error message, "Download and Installation Failed." I don't think this is my problem. I've never received that message. Unless it is in the WUPDATER that I am blocking with my firewall?

My advice.

I simply uninstall the Symantec items, clear the registry of any reference to Symantec, then install Free AVG from http://www.grisoft.com and then consider if I need a firewall (Zone Alarm works.)

You may find that a call to Symantec tech support to be fun. I know that I did when I discovered that bug.
