Start>Run>website won't open

by adamandlynn / December 27, 2007 12:36 AM PST

My machine fails to open a website from the Start>Run menu.

The problem started when my tax prep software wouldn't open websites from within the program. Tech support tried to configure IE and windows, no luck...then tried to open a website from Start>Run. It didn't work and he says that is the problem. The error message says example) can't be found or something similar(I'm at a different machine at work).

Outside the program my IE works fine. My ISP is Yahoo DSL.

Please HELP!

The exact error I get when I try to open a website( for example) through Start>Run is "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."

Any other suggestions?

When working in any non web based program, the links that would open a new IE window don't work. What do you think?

Long discussion at link

The CACHED version has all the things we need to check. I had hoped for the simple one.

I'm going to quote the usual fix:

"I happened upon this post today and I have the IDENTICAL PROBLEM!

I fixed it.

There is an entry in the registry:

I had in-error changed the value to "http://"

Simply highlight it and delete it. It will be replaced automatically by the correct value {default}

After that everything will work again.

I know this fixes the problem because I had the IDENTICAL problem. It took me over 6 hours to figure it out."
