"Start Navigation" clicking sound!!! what's the cause?

I know that I can go to sounds to disable the "Start Navigation" sound. But, I don't want to disable it until I know WHY it's clicking for no reason. I understand that when I open a new web page that the sound happens, but why is it happening when I'm away from the PC? If I have all programs closed and I'm just lying in bed, I hear the "click" sound of the "start navigation" sound.

I know HOW to get rid of it. It's an easy fix. But, WHY is it happening? I want to know if there's a bad program on my computer that is trying to access the internet while I'm not using it.

Probably the most common reason to hear the annoying IE clicking sound is that a page is set to refresh every so often, and each and every time that sound will be played. It could also be malware doing something nefarious.

You must like being under constant threat of malware though, since otherwise you would have switched to Firefox or Opera to get away from that. Can't say as I share in your devil may care attitude, but best of luck to you.

I do use firefox! I love it Happy

This sound happens even when IE is closed and I am using firefox.

I've used spybot, I've used Ad-Aware, I've used Window's Defender... i've cleared my Temp files...

I STILL HEAR FRIGGIN' "Click?" every other minute or so.

I use AT&T Yahoo! DSL... could those programs (Pop-Up blocker, Anti-Spy, Anti-Virus... etc. etc...) could they be the problem? What kind of program or application DOES this???

Navigation sound

I don't know the exact cause, but it seems to be related to one of the Yahoo features.

Without directly saying it, I think that they are saying it is their fault, and they are working on it. I haven't investigated this too closely, but if you run a packet capture program like etherreal, each clicking sound "seems" to be preceded immediately by a YAHOO_STATUS_AVAILABLE ping message. Again, this is just a guess, and could be coincidence.

Sound is caused by yop.exe

YOP.exe comes from SBC Yahoo! Online Protection on my system. While I have not installed any of the online protections plugins I still have an icon (triangle + bang) on my tray. I can get rid of the offending sound either by right-clicking the icon, selecting 'Exit', or by bringing up the Windows Task Manager and ending the YOP.exe process. Unfortunately at reboot the process starts up automatically. How do I get rid of YOP.exe more permanently?

Removing 'Start Navigation' sound

That's not really what I want to do; sometimes the 'Start Navigation' sound is a good clue. I just don't want it to be automatically generated by yop.exe So turning off the sound seems to be excessive in this case. Getting rid of yop.exe (which has an /autostart in the registry) is more appropriate.

Something In Your Tray

Hi Edburton,

Don't know if you ever figured this problem out, but I was having a similar problem. Basically, I think that when people are having this problem (as it seems to be rather prevalent) that they have some program, not necessarily malware or spyware, that is searching for updates every few seconds causing the "Start Navigation" sound to trigger. In my case, it was "Marvell Tray," a utility for managing a RAID array. I suggest looking in your tray and disabling the programs one at a time until you find the culprit. If it's nothing in your tray, then I'm not sure what to do. I'm not going to jump on the "scare" bandwagon and say it's mal/ad/spyare, but more likely some other 'bug' in one of your programs.

How do you get rid of Marvell Tray? I think I have that on my new build and I can't get that sound to stop! I cant seem to see anything called"Marvell Tray" to uninstall though

Marvell Tray Problem

I was having the "clicking sound" nightmare as well, and, during the course of my own research, I stumbled across your post. It's over a year old, so I don't know if you are still a member of CNET or not (in which case you'll never read this so it doesn't really matter), but for anyone else who's having this issue...

The problem is that the application "Marvell Tray" starts when you log into Windows, and then proceeds to check for updates about every 10 seconds, causing that oh-so-familiar "clicking" noise. The solution is to turn off the Marvell Tray application and prevent it from starting every time you use the computer.

If you go to Start, then Run, and type in "msconfig," you'll get to the System Configuration Utility. Under the "Startup" tab, you'll see the list of all applications that run when you start Windows (and you'll probably find tons of sneaky little programs that are gunking up you're system!). Simply scroll down to "MarvellTrayStartup" line and de-select it. Apply the change, reboot, and there'll be no more clicking. Judging from what I've read, and from my tech mentor, there is no danger in turning this application off.

Hope this helps someone.

Start Navigation Sound Starting All On Its Own

I'm having a similar (I think) problem whereby I have disabled Start Navigation in Windows 7 twice now and it somehow manages to reset itself. Is this a Win7 bug? Has anyone else experienced this?

I just disabled the sound; I never even had one until the latest update, to be honest. It's an unnessary one to me, so I just disabled it. I'd love to know what the cause behind it is, so. I use Chrome. It never happened to my ThinkPad until the recent update for Windows. Blah.
