Start Menu Hang

Aug 28, 2007 12:27AM PDT

I am not sure if this is a security question or not.
Whenever I load Windows XP usually when you click on the start menu right away it comes up. I have a decent computer so speed should be there. But once in a while when I click on the start menu it will hang for a second or 2 and then load up. It doesn't happen all the time but its annoying and I was wondering if anyone had the same problem or could just help out.
Thanks

I can duplicate that.

If I have a menu item that is on some USB drive and the USB drive is offline, the pause happens. Same for network items. Lesson learned. Don't do that.

I have a small network(6 computers) but with no files in my computer being shared, Think the network is doing that??

That's known too.

If there is an item you opened recently it will have an entry in the Recent Documents. This does create a small pause or delay.

Fix? Clear the recent documents. (and it's documented, repeatable, etc.)

When I see this I...

I would right click on the start button to explore the All Users and my Start menu checking each item to see if any remnant of a reference to any network or other than local item is there. This remains the most common delay item short of a machine that someone never ran disk cleanup or did the usual DMA flip noted at http://winhlp.com/?q=node/10

Remember I only have the clues you present here. So far these are the only items I encounter repeatedly. If your machine suffered a recent viral or other attack and you haven't shared that or if your Norton antivirus is nearing it's subscription date then I can't offer much about those.
