START MENU and Document List dilemmas

Feb 29, 2004 12:05PM PST

I am new to Windows XP (Home version)...and I have two questions:

1 When using the "Classic Start Menu", can I set things up (as I apparently can using the regular "Start Menu" option) so that documents which I open are NOT listed at all on the Start - Documents menu?

2 When using the "Classic Start Menu", how can I move items on the Start - Programs menu into a new folder which I have created and put onto the Programs menu? I tried dragging items into the new folder, but this didn't work.

Any help would be much appreciated.

When you select Classic Start Menu click Customize and click the Clear button "to remove records of recently accessed documents, programs, and Web sites."

Also scroll down the Advanced Start menu options and check the option: Enable dragging and dropping.
This should then enable you to make changes as you see fit.

Thank you, David. I made the change you suggested which now allows me to drag & drop.

Regarding the other question (i.e., When using the "Classic Start Menu", can I set things up, as I apparently can using the regular "Start Menu" option, so that documents which I open are NOT listed at all on the Start - Documents menu?), you explained how to CLEAR documents which are listed...what I would like is for nothing to even get listed; is this do-able using the "Classic Start Menu"?

A new question: On my Start - Programs list of programs, I cannot immediately see the entire list of programs; there is a little arrow/chevron at the bottom of the Programs list which I need to click in order to see all the programs. How can I make it so that this little arrow/chevron is not there...in other words, so that I always get the entire Programs list from the start?

Thanks again to you (and anyone else who may have suggestions for me).

Go to Start...Settings...Taskbar/Start menu...Start menu tab... Customize... Scroll down to bottom of list and un-check Personalized menus (most annoying feature ever...)

a NEW QUESTION

Thank you, IgnitionXP. That did it. (The "personalized menus" option had been, of course, pre-selected for me - not by me.)
Thanks again.
