Sounds like a trojan or other infection.

In reply to: Start menu

There are registry cleaners that do that and I have yet to fix these. I end up reinstalling the OS, apps and user files.

No viruses. Have run 2 virus checkers and no viruses no anything. I'm pretty good when it comes to that.

One last hurrah.

Go to Ninite.com and get Classic Start to see if that will get you a working start menu.

It would be nice if you would post a screen shot of the issue and test if a new user account fixes it.

Have tried everything. It will install Windows 8 start menu and am able to use it. Have run 2 virus checkers, no problem there. Have run a few of the usual command line repair features didn't work either.

Cannot take a screen shot because there is nothing to see. I can't see the start menu that's why I'm trying to find out how to get it back. I have tried everything everybody has posted. I don't have a backup because not long after I installed win 10 I lost the start menu. Is there a way to download Windows 10 again from Microsoft? I am willing to try anything right now to get it back.

Just last week, I made a recovery USB stick

In reply to: Start Menu

http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4200-recovery-drive-create-windows-10-a.html worked for me.

In fact I used that stick to repair my brother's Dell which was booting up to a blinking cursor. It was some deep blown OS issue. Probably some root kit that blew up.

Anyhow we both know how to boot other Live OSes ( I wrote about it years ago such as http://tips.oncomputers.info/archives2004/0401/2004-Jan-11.htm ) so I used this to reset the PC and it's back and working now.

I keep reading about Start menu failures but can't seem to find a recurring story besides registry cleaners, PC speedup programs and malware.

-> WHAT HAS NOT CHANGED IS THE NEED FOR A SPARE ADMIN ACCOUNT.

Windows since about Windows NT has an old issue which I call "corrupt profile" that can happen. Thankfully rare but not that rare. With the spare admin account we avoid a total reload.

The mystery to me is why folk don't spread the word about spare accounts and backup more.

Change Failed User to Adminstrator?

In reply to: Start Menu

Like many other posters regarding “Start and Search Not Working”, I had tried all the suggestions offered including the ‘powershell’ solution. None of these had ever worked – until today. The difference today is that I made a minor change to the steps to correct the problem.

The suggested steps are:
1. Right click Start Icon, select “Command Prompt(Admin)”
2. Type in: powershell
3. Type in: Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
4. Wait for completion and test for correction made.

Here is what worked for me:
1. Log in as Adminstrator
2. Open Settings, select users
3. Select the failing user, and change type to: Adminstrator
4. Logoff Administrator
5. Log in as the failing user.
6. Right click Start Icon, select “Command Prompt(Admin)”
7. Type in: powershell
8. Type in: Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
9. Wait for completion and test for correction made.
After trying the powershell solution for many times to get this issue resolved, I decided to make the user an Adminstrator just to see if there was any change. Voila!! I hope not to have any more issues with this problem, but if so I think I can effect a resolution. By the way, a side effect was that my previous Start menu charms were redone. Not a big thing to get this problem solved.
Good Luck everyone!

This one Works

In reply to: Change Failed User to Adminstrator?

After trying numerous options to fix this, this Method worked for me.
Just a word of Caution, it can take a while and sometimes look as if nothings happening, just wait till the bottom line shows a flashing Cursor place.
