Start a web design business like to xtgate,123triad, ciplex

Nov 30, 2009 11:54AM PST

After setting up my own website, I now would like to start a small business to offer web design for small companies and individual. I see there are several websites all over the internet like ciplex, visualscope, 123triad, xtgate, webdesign beach etc offering web design services in LA. Is it a good time at all to enter this market during this recession. How much does it cost to start a business to design websites, infrastructure cost, marketing collaterals etc. I am sure I can design nice websites, I am just not sure about how to go about marketing by business in Greater LA area.

True the number of users are increasing exponentially every year, but bear in mind that the competition is increasing as well, now is getting very competitive, but if you are confident enough just jump in, is never late.
Good luck.

I have started a small web design business in 2009, so far I have done very good. More than I ever did in my 9-5 jobs.

Having a website is as important as having a phone these days. Plus all the old websites want to redesign their websites. This business can only grow. However its also becoming to competitive.

I left out the link to his own business. Advertising isn't allowed on these forums:

"As a graphic design business owner myself, I would say yes, this is a good business idea, plus the startup budget does not have to be very high especially if you're planning to start online only. My own startup budget was $100 when I started back in 2003.

Hope this helps.

Alvin"

A hard Work
Mar 17, 2010 6:00PM PDT

It is not easy to earn on the Internet. Though I trust that you can design nice websites, other people don't know, so you need to promot your site not just design it, another word, SEO. It will take you a long time before you can earn money.

Simply joining community of designers won't get you business

I don't think, simply joining a forum of designers, will help getting clients.

In my opinion, there are a lot of challenges, thrills and chances for making it big when owning your own business - but about 95% of start ups go out of business within the first 5 years.

Here is why:
- Most start-ups won't start making money right away and if you don't have any savings to pay your personal and business bills, you will go broke before making it.
- Most start-ups start their business without any business plan.
- Most start-ups don't know about federal, state and local laws, finances, taxation, labor laws, business management, branding, marketing, business ethics, etc.
- And also the Web Design business is highly competitive. There are big companies such as GoDaddy, Intuit and Register who give away Web Sites for as low as $199.

The good things about starting a web design company is that there are relatively few expenses (compared to starting up another small business). Sure you need to pay for hardware and software, and hosting (you can even go with free hosts to start with!) but overall these cost are fairly small.

Cons, well if you're freelance, you could get bogged down with hundreds of clients if you're not careful and without a team to help you out, you could get stuck. Also you have to do everything - you can't really specialize in any particular area as you will need a very broad experience e.g. coding, design, setting up the servers. etc

To startup you can get the orders and outsource the webdesign to India. So that you need not to invest much money on development and designing.
