Standard Definition Picture Horrible on LN46A550P3F

Dec 5, 2008 9:37AM PST

I am attempting to display my standard definition Dish Network signal on my new LN46A550P3F via a coaxial connection and the image is horrible. Images in the picture which are not moving look pretty clear, but the second something in the image moves it becomes very blocky and fuzzy.

I am using the same setup with my 3 year old Sony 55" rear projection LCD TV and the image quality is quite good even during fast motion sequences.

Please Help, this has made very unhappy with my Samsung TV purchase.

Thanks much,

Michael

Comparison.

Michael,

Welcome to the forum.

Just so I can reference the picture comparison, was your 55" LCD projection an HD or SD set?

Movement on SD-to-HD pictures can often be "blocky and fuzzy" because you're displaying 480 lines of resolution on a 1080p panel, which is more than twice the original resolution. This is best compared to zooming in too far on a picture you're viewing on a computer.

To make sure the unit isn't malfunctioning, you also might want to compare the unit in the store where you purchased it from. Ask the salesperson to show you your version of your television on an SD feed and see if that's what you're seeing.

Please keep me posted. We're here to help.

There must be a way to improve the picture...

The 55" Sony has a 720 resolution, so this may be part of the reason the SD picture doesn't look too bad. But the thing I don't understand is why some 1080 TVs do a much better job than others at displaying a SD signal and the LN46A550 seems to be one of the worst I have seen.

I also wonder if there are particular picture settings that can be adjusted to improve the situation?

Thanks

Try....

Try adjusting down the Auto Motion plus, perhaps.

Unfortunately, there's no silver bullet to make SD signals look great on an 1080p HD picture.

Oops!

I'm sorry. I read your model wrong, as the A550 doesn't have Auto Motion Plus feature. Please accept my sincere apologies.

If you're seeing Standard Definition and it looks bad, I just don't have any answers for that. It's a 480 signal being converted to 1080 lines of resolution. And because I can't see what you're seeing, I'm not sure if it's the standard upconversion or a different picture issue. I don't have a solution.

The best I can offer is to see of a phone technician can walk you through some of the settings. 800-SAMSUNG is our tech support number.
