Question

Standard (category 1) HDMI cable used with 4K TV

Feb 15, 2016 7:53PM PST

There are four basic types of HDMI cables:

High-speed (also called Category 2)
High-speed (also called Category 2) with Ethernet
Standard-speed (Category 1)
Standard-speed (Category 1) with Ethernet

Can a standard Category 1 HDMI cable be used on a 4K TV?

Answer
Yes- *but* it cannot pass high bandwidth (>1080p) content

It may work for passing along standard high-def content (720p, 1080i & 1080p), but does not have the required bandwidth for passing along 4K content.

Keep in mind right now that the folks with 4K HDTVs are mostly viewing non-4K content.
