stand alone IE does not work while AOL is running

Apr 23, 2005 1:21AM PDT

I'm having a problem with a stand alone IE not working when I have AOL running. I connect at home with DSL and at work sometimes with dialup. Both have the same result. I am using a HP laptop and completely updated WinXP.
I spoke to aol tech who are useless, removed aol from the start up menu, and checked "never dial a connection". The last 2 are suggestions from another forum who's only other suggestion was to get rid of AOL. This is not an option.

I get "Cannot find server" "page cannot be displayed" when I'm logged onto AOL. Once I log off AOL but still on DSL,IE works fine. I been using Firefox in the meanwhile with no problems while logged onto AOL. Any ideas whats going on?

The usual? Spyware or hijacked IE.

The usual is that IE has been hijacked. In short, IE can reprogrammed via spyware to use some other DNS and that fails when you are on AOL.

Read about Spyware and common tools in the Virus and Security forum.

spyware

I use 3 spyware removal progrms, spybot search and distroy, ad-aware, and spyware doctor on a regular basis. And I checked add/remove in the control panel for anything that looks out of place.

At first I was concerned about this problem because several programs would only update with IE (i.e. Java) But now I know all I need to do is be on DSL and not logged onto AOL for IE to work. I was just wondering why it was doing this. Could the IE thats built into AOL be affecting the stand alone?

I have to move to HIJACKTHIS to see under the hood.

Have you found a HJT forum for a reading?

(Email me your HJT log in my profile and I'll look, but offer no promises.)

2 SUSPECTS.

1. O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://us8l.hpwis.com Possibly nasty
Possibly nasty This entry should be fixed if this address does not belong to your PC-manufacturer or your 'Internet-Service-Provider (ISP)'. This entry should be fixed if 'http://us8l.hpwis.com' is not your PC-manufacturer or your 'Internet-Service-Provider (ISP)'.

2. O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{4E0EB247-525C-41D1-B8DD-627AF6980C7D}: NameServer = 205.188.146.145 Possibly nasty
Possibly nasty If this Domain does not belong to your ISP, or your firms network, these entries should be fixed. 'SearchList' entries should be fixed too. Do you know the IP or Domain '205.188.146.145'? If not, fix this entry.

I'd get this to some HJT forum but I'd remove these on my machine.

The NAMESERVER is a prime suspect.
