1. Use a spreadsheet. Each row is a person. Each column is a certain period of time (day, week, month, quarter, year, you didn't tell how fine your scale should be). Use a background color for 'present'.
2. Use a project management tool. They are excellent for planning resources (people) across time, but work just as well for history, of course.

I am doing an inquiry of staff at an institution over about a 30 year time period involving about 90 persons who were at the institution at varying years. I want to be able to look at something and see what staff were working at a particular time. My problem is that not all the staff were there at the same time i.e some commenced employment in 1962 and ceased in 1969 while others commenced in 1955 and ceased in 1972.
The persons in the institution were likewise not all there at the same time.
So it involves about 50 staff, about 90 persons names and one institution over about a 30 year time period.
My wish list, would be to look at the page and see when various staff were there at the same time that various particular plaintiffs were there. I have a colour printer. I just cannot get my little mind around how to do it or even where to start.
If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. i have both office for mac + beta of office 2010 on vista & pages
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and have a good weekend.
Cheers
