Question

SSD Suggestions

Aug 19, 2012 8:51AM PDT

I own a a mid-2010 MacBook Pro 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 (15" DDR3) MC3733LL/A with a 512GB HDD, and soon to have 8GB of RAM.

I'm looking to replace my HDD with an SSD, or else supplement my HDD with an SSD in such a way as to drastically boost my laptop's performance.

I'm a professional web developer and graphic designer and I dabble in both software design and gaming.

Speed is important to me, as is reliability. Being a techie, I'm willing to delve a little deeper than normal into the details, but hardware's not really my thing.

Given my circumstances, what SSDs would you recommend, and where am I likely to get the best deal?

Thanks for your help!

Edit: BTW, A friend recently recommended the Samsung 512GB 830 Series SSD with Internal Laptop Kit and Norton Ghost 15; anyone agree? disagree?

I'd check out the high-speed SSDs offered by Other World Computing. The company's drives consistently rate at the top of the speed tests and the prices are as good as you will find anywhere.

And I'd recommend that you buy one of their external cases for your existing Disk Drive -- I'm not that big a fan of doubling hard drives in the tightly-packed MBP case -- and use donation-ware SuperDuper to clone your existing drive to the new setup and create a bootable backup after it's installed. SuperDuper really is. I recommend it highly.
