"Also keep in mind that if you have a Desktop, you could just connect this drive as a secondary internal drive instead of using USB to SATA." i know that the article from **** Ngo was for laptops. can i install the ssd drive into my desktop, clone it and then reinstall as my main drive? then use hard drive as backup drive?

Whether you clone the hdd to the ssd internal or external does not matter.

Clone to the ssd and then remove the hdd.
Connect the ssd to the hdd sata port....boot it up.

Set the hdd aside for a week or so while you test and if all is good you can do what you want with it.

For laptop, it's OK to clone HDD to SSD via USB. But if your laptop’s HDD develops a major malfunction and Windows cannot boot up. You can remove the old drive from your laptop, install the new SSD, install Windows on it and then connect your failed HDD with USB as a temporary external drive. In this situation, you still have a decent chance to copy your files from HDD to SSD except that the drive is completely dead.
For your desktop, you should make the ssd a secondary disk and clone.

doesn't matter. The number of drive bays is important. My Alienware 18 will allow up to 4 drives but one is a MSATA. You can use USB (external) or SATA (internal) and both will work the SATA should be a little faster.
