Question

SSD drive

Feb 24, 2018 5:56PM PST

How do I fresh install win 10 on a Evo 850 drive and make it my boot drive while making the old hdd as a secondary drive? The problem is the hdd drive started having issues and would not boot up to windows due to some error that could not be fixed by microsoft. My system still recognizes the old drive and reports data there as before but it will not boot. I want to keep the data on the hdd and access it after installing to the new drive if possible. It did have a functioning and legit copy of windows 10 on it but it just would not boot just keep restarting and trying. Any help is appreciated.

Answer
Here's what I do.

I remove the iffy HDD for safety so I don't accidentally wipe it out. Now with just the Evo installed, install W10 from the usual W10 install repair stick you made with the (free) Microsoft Media Creation stick. There is no need to find a CD KEY due to digital entitlement. Drivers are done the same as before (get from maker, install in the usual order of motherboard, audio, video and others.)

Clarification

Thanks for the post. It helped to know I was doing right so far. What I was looking for was some guidance on using the old hdd as a secondary drive. It is still functional as a drive it just has a os problem that can't be corrected by the system or microsoft. The data is still there. But it just will not boot up to windows and it keeps restarting. What I want to do is wipe windows off the drive but maintain the data as it is games, pictures and stuff. Is that possible to do or am I done on that drive. The new install on the evo850 went well and it is now the primary drive
