General discussion

Square pixels

Dec 13, 2004 7:47AM PST

I was in Best Buy recently, and I noticed that a couple of flat panel HDTVs with 1366x768 native resolution looked better than those with 1280x768 or 1024x768 or 1024x1024. In fact, the 42" Fujitsu plasma which has 1024x 1024 looked a little blurry.

The salesguy mentioned that the Fujitsu had an "unusual" resolution which required rectangular pixels since the aspect ratio is 16x9. I thought about this and then I realized if a 16x9 TV is going to have square pixels, it will need to have a resolution proportional to 16x9. Most plasmas do not have proportional resolution. There are currently two options in this case in the 40-46" range: 1366x768 (plasma) and 1920x1080 (LCD).

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed that sets with the proportional resolution have better pictures (I have not yet seen the 1920x1080 sets).
