Spyware Question ???

Aug 29, 2005 9:36AM PDT

I use Adaware to take off spyware and do it regularly!
I don't understand WHY, once you've REMOVED them ...the same ones keep coming back over and over.
Is there a way to get rid of them permanently?
I realize this will sound stupid to most of you but it looks like, once you've gotten rid of them....they would STAY gone ??

Hiding places...
Aug 29, 2005 9:47AM PDT
Click here to see a post concerning spyware loving you so much that it prevents its own deletion, and hides clones of itself in your System Restore files.

Aside from that, Lavasoft's AdAware doesn't scan for spyware, it scans for adware...a different breed of malware. (Spyware monitors your actions and sends back information to the creator, while adware brings you gifts of ads.) To scan for and remove spyware, use free programs such as Microsoft Antispyware (for Windows 2000/XP users) and SpyBot.

Happy hunting!

The tech probably...
Aug 29, 2005 10:56AM PDT

The tech probably didn't know enough to advise you on the matter. Techs who work for ISP's and such are only trained for specific tasks, and don't know much else, especially about current software, unless they are, well, geeks who keep up on it. Ever tried asking a question to someone at Best Buy about how to install the products they sell?! Even technical support personel (eg McAfee, Dell, etc) usually read off cards, going down the list of possibilities then pass you onto a superviser if they run out of "ideas." If nothing else, at least his recommendation of AdAware helped keep adware and at least some spyware (there is that little bit of overlap) off of your computer.

Glad I could help,
John

John!! I don't know what to do?
Aug 29, 2005 11:21AM PDT

I went to the SpyBot page and entered the forum to ask if my firewall would interfere with the download of the SpyBot but nobody was home !!!
I have a VCOM antivirus/firewall and AdAware and that's ALL.
Do I turn the firewall OFF to install the Spybot?
It gave a "compatable" list but VCOM was not on it?

I had asked on the other forum here (but it is for experienced users) if one firewall was better than another and found out they all do the same thing !!!!???? at least that's what I was told.
Help me if you can, please.

Firewall
Aug 29, 2005 12:24PM PDT

Sue: I wouldn't worry about any inteference from your firewall, just go ahead with the download. I'm not familiar with your firewall, I use Zone Alarm, but never had an issue with downloads.

One reason you keep seeing the same adware files in Adaware, is that Adaware detects many cookies that are downloaded when you visit certain websites. You can delete them, but when you visit that site again, it gets replaced. Most are not a serious threat.

Spybot DSO Exploit Fix
Aug 30, 2005 5:09AM PDT

You will also want to install this patch for Spybot Search & Destroy.
Scroll down the page to Spybot Search & Destroy DSO Exploit Fix. Download and install.
This will stop Spybot from detecting the DSO Exploit on every scan.

Unless you name them we have no way of knowing . . .

Is there a way to get rid of them permanently?

The simple answer is NO. What you need to understand and do is described in my ''forum posting here.''
