Spyware Detector problems from maxpcsecure

Aug 10, 2008 2:44AM PDT

My computer is Fujitsu Siemens , 1GB RAM , Intel (R) Celeron (R) CPU ,
540 @ 1.8 GHz , running Windows Vista Home Basic .

I tried this software on a Friday night and was impressed , first I tried a quick scan then a full scan , it found about 20,000 threats . I purchased it and decided to run it over night with an anti virus scan (Avira) .
On Saturday morning I quarantined the threats and restarted my computer as instructed. When the start up screens appeared there was one I had not seen before . Then a completely different desk top appeared to my normal one . the background colour, wallpaper and icon size had all changed.
Three internet radio programs out of about 7 stopped working , some keys no longer gave the correct characters, toolbars and home pages were no longer present .
Other irritations occured , when un zipping a file I could not close it afterwards without getting an error message , I had to close them using the task manager.
I could not double click on a photograph in a file and view them one by one , instead I had an error message telling me to search the internet or computer for the program to do this.
I contacted maxpcsecure who told me to do another full scan , quarantine and restart then scan again ,log it and send it to them , I should get a reply on Monday.
But every time I scanned, quarantined and restarted (which is meant to clear all threats) on rescanning (even when not connected to the internet ) it still found 20,000 threats .
I uninstalled this software and now have a stable computer , on re-installing the 3 internet radios which were affected (Audials-1,Online radio tuner and Replay AVCool I have had little success . Replay AV8 now starts and is ok , Online radio tuner wil not start and Audials-1 will not start but will run as Radiotracker Platinum version (a simpler version).
Before I ran this program I used Microsofts Malware ,Spybot and Adaware free version and had no problems . All the free internet radio programs I have were totally unaffected it was only the more complex purchased ones that were disrupted .
Maybe Microsofts malware program does not perform as well as other products in tests , finding as many threats , but perhaps it picks up the more important ones and is more stable and reliable ?

Spyware Detector - questionable
Aug 10, 2008 11:38AM PDT

hashioki..

SpywareDetector has had a less than desirable past. It used to be on, "The Spyware Warrior List of Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites", but was de-listed in 2006. (It's listed as SpywareDetector.net and also SpywareDetector.com)

Spybot was also detecting it as rogue. There's a thread at the Spybot forum titled, " Spyware Detector on Malware list". When the thread was created in July of 2006, "Yodama" a member of the Spybot Team wrote, "the reason why SpywareDetector is listed as Malware is that it can get installed without userconsent along with a Smithfraud-C infection. So basically SpywareDectector will find an infection on your computer, an infection that came along with it. Then they charge you to remove the infection they are responsible for".

According to the same Spybot Team member, Spybot is no longer detecting it. Max Secure was supposed to have "cleaned up their act" and practices. Since the above thread was first created, I see someone posted a couple of weeks ago, expressing concerns that Spybot detected SpywareDetector on their system. I really don't know what is fact, as I haven't looked into it. What I do know is that there are plenty of good programs, which don't have this sort of past. (See the sticky at the top of the forum)

You wrote that you uninstalled the software. RogueRemover Free used to detect it, stating it "uses false advertising and fake comments on blog websites to promote their product". It still might detect it. Why not scan with it and see if it finds any additional files? It won't cost you anything.

Syware Detector update
Aug 13, 2008 6:08AM PDT

Today (13-08-0Cool , almost all of the problems have been solved , the Online radio tuner works if you start it as an Administrater . It was suggested I use Rogue Remover (free version) to make sure every part of Spyware Detector had been removed. It found a file in the program files and I removed it .Previously I had carried out a search using the Windows Search function and thought I had removed everything .
Anyway on Saturday I asked for my money back and made it clear I did not want to install their software again.
The technical department just carried on giving advice on re-running their software and customer support wanted me to follow the technical advice and wait another week .
Today I contacted my credit card company (Barclays) who said if I received no refund they could "raise a dispute" against the company and they will investigate .
Which is what I will do tommorrow.

Keep records...

of all activities and conversations with dates... cite the issues with and how the software exaggerates or fraudulently finds issues that do not exist or how it fails to perform. If a claim is filed, they need all information you can provide in order to investigate and issue a credit.

I went through this some years back with a piece of hardware that was never delivered... all my letters and contacts went unanswered. Credit card company got it handled and fast... so don't hesitate to go that route if needed. In my case after complaining and outlining the situation, I never heard a word from the card issuer... only saw a prompt credit to my the account.

Hope this helps.

Easy To Say In Hindsight.....
Aug 10, 2008 3:22PM PDT

that your 1ST clue to SD being a "rogue program" (beyond being on list)
was the "it found about 20,000 threats "! With that # of threats onboard, the machine probably wouldn't have booted at all!

If it did finally boot, accessing any functions or programs would have to be almost impossible due to massive conflicts slowing each action into the realm of HOURS!

Please ADD the Rogue List Address to you "Favorites" (IE) Or "Bookmarks"
(MOZ.) & ALWAYS check the list BEFORE downloading any of this type of program & if possible check list before going to the site offering program to avoid possible "drive-by download". Good Luck in future!
Safe surfing! Happy

Spyware Detector / maxpcsecure update
Aug 20, 2008 2:24AM PDT

I made an online complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority concerning the 30 Day money back guarantee (no questions asked) given by maxpcsecure .
This was a quick and simple process and yesterday I received 2 e-mails from maxpcsecure and Plimus sales confirming I have been refunded although it may take up to 5 days before it appears on my credit card.

Problems with Spyware Detector from Maxpcsecure.
Sep 16, 2008 12:33PM PDT

I purchased a copy of Spyware Detector on July 21st last and received
my Registration Key on the 22nd. When I tried the key, I got the message that it was not for my computer. I contacted MaxSecure Tech.Support on several occasions in an attempt to resolve this problem but never received an answer to my problem beside the automatic reply. Finally I uninstall the Spyware Detector program, purchased a different program and requested a full refund of the amount I had paid. Still no reply. Finally on the 29th Aug, I received a reply stating that I had registered my copy of Spyware Detector under a Registration Key which was completely different from the one I had received on July 22nd. It is evident that they had screwed up somewhere. After bringing this to their attention, they sent me a new Registration Key, however as mentioned before, I had purchased a different software. Every week since then, I have requested a refund but they do not have the decency to answer my e-mails. So for anybody thinking about purchasing a product from Maxpcsecure, I would think twice about it as they don't seem to back-up their claim of "Satisfaction guaranteed or your money refunded"

I sent a message to Maxsecure and told them I was going to
complain to the Advertising Standards Authority. The
following day I received two messages promising me a refund within
a few days. Sure enough, my credit card was credited with
the full amount I had paid. Thanks for the advice.
