Spybot vs Ad Aware (free version)

Aug 22, 2005 1:48AM PDT

I regularly use these two to scan my computer, especially before I do any internet banking. AdAware always seem to find something, whereas Spybot doesn't always (gives me "Congratulations, no Spyware found!"), especially since updating to version 1.4. I've scanned with AdAware RIGHT AFTER Spybot, and it found things. Is Spybot not as thorough as AdAware, or is AdAware too sensitive? Are they scanning for different things, that one considers a threat, while the other one doesn't? Just curious what other's experience.
Thanks!

Spybot

Spybot blocks pages silently.

Did you immunize youe system?

I usually use

CW Shredder first then

Spybot S & D then

Ad Aware.

I also use SpyWare Blaster. It also blocks Spyware from getting into your computer.

Then about once a month I go to

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

and do an online scan. You'll be surprised with the results.

Also try the free scanning items at the website listed below

Hope this helps

ALL anti-anything software are NOT created alike. That's why there are so many of them.

Spyware and Adware are different things

Although there is plenty of crossover, SpyBot and Ad-Aware search for different forms of malware.

Spybot searches for those nasty little programs that get installed on computers to spy on surfing habits, passwords, credit card details, login names, etc.

Ad-Aware looks for ads, and for tracking cookies that can target your surfing habits to display appropriate banner ads at participating sites.

You need Both

The previous advice is good. Continue to use both. Update regularly (updates usually arrive about once every week or two) and Spybot must be Immunised after every update. Run Spybot in Advanced mode and read all set-up instructions. Customising of Ad-Aware is good to do as well.

One other BRILLIANT free tool that doesn't get many mentions is A-Squared free version - takes a while to run but goes IN DEPTH into files, including archives.

One other trusted thing to do is run the free online check from Trend.

AND... just incase a program (or internet page) tries to add stuff to your start-ups use Winpatrol free version. It's better than MSconfig. Once you've got it, remember to switch it off BEFORE updating it.

Good cleaning.
