Spybot and XP

Feb 8, 2004 6:02AM PST

I would like to know if anyone is using SpyBot 1.2 on a Windows XP machine? A friend of mine was telling me about it so, I decided to check it out. I was reading some of the reviews at download.com, and several of them were negative, and warned that it corrupted and deleted Windows XP files. Is that true? I am a little reluctant to download, and install something unless I know more about it. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this issue.

I use that with no ill effects.

KAZAA and other such software users can't use this software since it will indeed break Ad-supported applications. But this is just me writing that I want such to break so we can identify the SPYWARE.

I use that version on my XP Home Edition with no problems.
You may not want to use the Immunize feature, as I have heard that it may deny you access to some pages, or features on pages, that it considers unsafe. Not sure about this since I haven't used it.
And, it does nothing without your permission, so you decide what to want to do with it's scanning results. And it does have a recovery option in case things act flakey after you remove something.

I use spybot with my home xp, and also use the immunize without any issues. Its a nice little program at the great price tag of 'free' . check for updates once a while and it will be fine.

It also allows you to edit your 'start up programs' which is a great plus when some programs install themselves at start up (without even a 'by your leave'), and you have the option of finding out whether they are essntial to your OS and deleting them if unnecessary.

I have been using Spybot for about 2 months now and have had absolutely NO problems with in whatsoever. I also read some negatives about it but I firmly believe that they originated from competitors in the spyware arena, or from spyware producers themselves. If you have it, go fo it.

One last point... use the default settings until you thoroughly learn how to use it properly. By not doing so you could possibly destroy some of the files yourself.

Yeah...My nephew who's a computer geek btw...he installed spybot on my computer but if ur presently using ad-aware6.0 they r not compatible. He highly recommends it but it's more complicated for me I guess so I just use ad-aware6.0. I still have spybot installed in my program files...I just don't run it because it kinda was confusing and it blocked a lot but I couldnt even get on certain game sites...like pogo etc. Anyway...it definately is good to do some research and it's good if u kno howta use it even...lol...I just went back to ad-aware tho. I am using both Spybot 1.2 and AdAware 6 on a Windows XP machine with no problems at all, in fact it is surprising that after running a check with either one, a check with the other will often find a data miner or changed key that the first one missed.

I have used Spybot in all versions as well as Adaware through current version. No problems on the operating system or browsers over the 18 months or so that I have had it installed.

I've used SpyBot for over a year now, first on 98SE, then on XP Home. I've had no trouble, ever, with it. And it has done a very good job of keeping my Area-51 clear of spyware.

I'am presently running XP-SP1 with spy Bot search and destroy and have had ho problems with it as of yet. I also run zone alarm pro at the same time, for unwanted spyware and tracking cookies that seems to be everywhere. spybot gets most of the problems, and zone alarm helps with the rest.the main thing is knowing what you are deleteing when something is found. I would suggest to you to download and use.

Spybot and XP work well together for me. I find it to be an excellent program and to be compatible with Ad-aware with each finding things the other didn't. Never had a problem and used since before the latest version.

I won't "leave home without it"! Grin

I use Spybot 1.2 with XP Pro. Spybot gives this warning when you start the program:
"If you remove advertisements with this program, you may not be allowed to continue using their host programs. Read their license agreements for further info."
Maybe that is what the reviews were talikng about. My reaction is I don't worry. 1.) I do not want most programs Spybot identifies as spyware operating on my system anyway, so I am glad if those programs are disabled. 2.) If I decide I want any of those programs despite what they do, then I can run or reinstall the program to get the files back that Spybot removed. No problem.
I have never had a problem with Spybot. In Spybot's FAQ section in Help, it says "Spybot-S&D saves backups of the problems you have fixed; to make it possible to recover them in case something stops working after the fix." I think it is a good and safe program to use. Just read the Help information first so you know what you are doing. It is highly rated as one of the best, and it is also free. It has not caused me any grief at all. You could create a Win XP Restore point before using it, if you wish. Get it and try it, I say. I do not think there will be any problem. I have not had one.

I have no problems whatsoever using spybot with XP Home Edition. Its a great program and I also use adaware from lavasoft as well so if spybot doesn't pick anything up (which is very rare!) adware takes care of it. Scarma101.

I have been using spybot, for some time and have NO trouble, with it. I think the problem, with some, may be caused by some software programs.
I have quite a few and have no trouble.

If your machine is running slow and not up to snuff..... then you should be running Spybot, and Adaware, etc... Maunfacturers and developers are all to willing to add tracking software to the programs they want you to load (unanounced to you typically). Beware of BackWeb, Gator, Hitbox and all the cookies that infiltrate your system. Spybot and Adaware are fantastic programs that will help you recover your system. By all means run them regularly. I have been through progressions of all operating systems.... and have not had them fail me yet.
