Question

Spring Cleaning

May 6, 2014 2:15PM PDT

My G4 Power Mac running OS 10.5.8 is running slow & may have a subtle touch of alzheimers. I have attempted Spring Cleaning but it is beyond my skill level. Can someone guide me through it? Also I have tried to install a new retail dvd of iWork '05 and it won't complete the install because of "invalid" serial #'s. What's with this?

First step, Get rid of Spring Cleaning.

Second step, contact Apple if you believe that the serial numbers you have for iWork are genuine but your G4 does not.

While I know what Alzheimer's is, define how it applies to your particular machine.

Running slow could be a number of things, all of which you have not mentioned despite the red note underneath every post that is made here.

Which processor is it using? We know it is a G4 but there are a number of those.
What sort of G4 is it. There are lots of those
How much RAM is installed.
What is the Hard Drive capacity?
How much free space do you have on that hard drive?

Why "get rid of Spring Cleaning? & How do I get rid of it?
May 7, 2014 7:33AM PDT

I did contact Apple re the iWork install serial #'s and they would not say "why" or offer any solution except to take it into Apple Repair.

Alzheimer's = Safari screen freeze (could not close down or force quit) and slower than normal downloads, icons being re-arranged & mail icon disappearing from dock for no apparent reason. I may have caused some of this by unplugging the power cord on several occasions.

Below I have listed the Hardware Overview from "About this Mac". Please show me how to find the HD free space? Also, please let me know if there is anything else that you need. I very much appreciate your help!

OK, Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver) 2002

What's probably going on here is a severe case of OS fatigue.

Might be time to backup all your data, pictures, videos, music, etc to an external drive and reinstall the Operating System again.

This will give you a nice fresh start, on an admittedly old version of OSX, but it should behave a title better.
Free hard drive space is seen in the same "about this Mac" under the ATA section where you can see the HD specs.
Failing that, it could be at the bottom of every Finder window that you open.

The problem with Safari may never be cured though. The Internet has moved on by leaps and bounds since your machine first saw the light of day and your version of Safari is not really capable of displaying what is out there now.

I was going to mention Firefox but I see there is not a secure version for 10.5.8

As for Spring Cleaning. I wish I got $60 an hour for sorting out the problems caused by Spring Cleaning.....Oh wait.....I did!
