Partition Magic may give you a way of getting what you want. Personally I feel safer if my files (copies) are off the drive completely before a format is done. Network to another machine/CDRs or an external hard drive are my choices.

We need to know:

a. Current configuration of the existing drive and whether partitioned?

b. Size of the existing drive and if partitioned, the sizes/space?

c. Procedure or process used (history) to configure the current drive and partition(s)?

You can't save program files, only data files, to be recombined. You also need to save the Windows folder so you can search it for drivers for the new install.
you must defrag before creating a new partition, so ALL files are together, leaving clear space to use.
Only Partition Magic and a FEW others will save all stuff on the 1st partition.

I may be wrong but I don't see how splitting the hard drive will help if it is already full of crap. Get rid of the crap before you do anything.
