Question

Split an MP4 into Multiple Segments and still be playable?

Aug 23, 2017 9:46AM PDT

Hi.
I have been trying to shrink an MP4 file into many segments of 10MB and still have the file show up and be playable as an MP4 with Kodi.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
I want to backup my the MP4 to the cloud (mounted in windows) but the provider only supports files up to 10MB. The reason I have the cloud provider as mounted is because I would like to be able to just place them in that folder and still be able to play them on that same device. The cloud folder does let me place things in it but it doesn't get uploaded due to the 10MB limit.
And, yes, I have tested and Kodi does allow me to play videos out of that folder.
Could I please have some help?
Thanks in advance!

Clarification Request
I'm going with "can be advanced editing."

Why? MP4 is not a format but a container as noted at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_14
Why is that important to know? Because it's a container it doesn't dictate how the content is encoded so you can't run your favorite editor and be sure the encoding is supported.

You MUST try your editor. You must know about encoding to do this the normal way.

Or you could try MP4 SPLITTER on google and see if that works. After that you deal with Kodi as to file names and play lists.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I have two more questions about what you said. First of all, is there an online guide or something you could link me to about how containers work?
Secondly, is there a specific MP4 SPLITTER software I should try? I Googled it and there are about 30 different programs that are titled MP4 Splitter.

I actually have one more question: Does Kodi support split RAR files? I was thinking about splitting the 300MB TV Show into multiple 10MB RAR files with WINRAR. Would that work? If so, how would I get Kodi to play the MP4 from the RAR file? I have seen a few other programs that are capable of viewing split RAR files but no word on if Kodi can do so.

Thanks for the help.

Audio video "containers" are just that. You could go deeper than that and come away wiser but no closer to a solution. I gave you where the rabbit hole entrance are about this but know not to go further.

-> Here's why it's a big deal (container.) This means the actual audio content inside can be encoded in any manner and why editors will fail on some MP4s.

Second, no. Since I've been editing for years I gave you a lead about containers and a nod to google MP4 Splitters since you may not want to invest the time to understand containers and then encoding. I worry you didn't get the container comment but in a not completely true but true statement MP4 is just like a RAR file. Asking to split RAR files and asking RAR to understand a third part splitter could be trouble. Best to let RAR do that. May take some time to get that.

New question about Kodi. Never saw that. There are Kodi forums to pose Kodi questions. Be careful as if you push too hard they may call you a newb or impetuous.

BOTTOM LINE. Because you are dealing with a container file (MP4) I can not recommend and be sure any MP4 SPLITTER will work. You either try a few or investigate the encoding to see why this happens.

Okay. I think I get it now. Before I saw this post, I actually tried to use WinRAR to archive one of the files into split RAR files. When I went into Kodi, the file didn't show up.
I would have read that Wikipedia page but I am at my high school right now and there are teachers constantly looking over my shoulder. (I'm supposed to be working).

Thanks.

OK, the school metaphor.

You have a classroom but it may contain any type of content. Container = classroom.

Give yourself time to dig into what things are. My advice is to try a few MP4 SPLITTERS anyway.

Have you tried doing this in a Youtube account? It has editing available that will let you split videos and then download the splits back to your computer as mp4 files.

They Took Down The YouTube Video Editor

I actually am a YouTube creator myself and I have received an email update about how they will be taking the video editor off the site because hardly anyone used it.

Bummer!

I haven't done any video splicing on there for awhile, didn't realize they'd killed the editor. Missed the email.
