Theodore, You Need Some Prerequisites...
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / January 5, 2005 6:37 AM PST

First, which program are using that needs a spellchecker? (Outlook Express maybe?) Where are you accessing "tools - options - grammer& spelling". Generally, a program like Microsoft Office/Word or Microsoft Works needs to be installed so their "dictionary" can be used by the spell checker. Do you have those programs installed?

There is a free spellchecker which might help you situation. Here's that link:

Hope this helps.

Spellcheck not working.

Microsoft XP home, accessing tools-options-grammer in Micrsoft word. I cannot change the dictionary from custom and custom shows 0mb which sounds normal to me as I never put any words in the custom dictionary. Spellcheck does not work on my my table top Dell that I have had for a couple years. Also spellcheck does not function on my my new Dell Laptop with the same operating system.

Is this Word 97?

Occasionally that will break in XP. No cure is known and this version is not supported on XP.

In reply to: Is this Word 97?

Yes it is from Office 97. Does that mean a new word program or using the one that came with it is the solution.

In short, yes.

The Office 97 on Windows XP is unsettling to some since it may work for most. For those it fails, they feel slighted.

You can try uninstalling and reinstalling Office 97.

Here's a solution for Spell Check
by Tufenuf / January 5, 2005 8:26 AM PST

Theodore, Go to the link below and follow the instructions and the link also has a link fo the csapi3t1.dll file if you need to download it. This has worked for many and should correct the problem. Just follow the instructions under the "Solution" section and all should work out for you.

I may try your suggestion on one of the computers. I deleted Word 97 from the desk top computer and installed Works 2002 since it came with the computer but I just used Word 97. Spellcheck works fine now. Thanks for your help. This forum has been the most successfull at answering my questions.

I have had problems with my table top computer and recently my son partititoned the drive, reloaded the operating system and transfered the files to it. Maybe when Dell loaded it the first time they corrected the problem.
