General discussion

spectrum analyzers?

Feb 8, 2005 12:44AM PST

This doesn't quite fit into this forum, but I don't know where else to ask. I'm looking for a portable spectrum analyzer / frequency detector that I can use for a project of mine to detect signal strength from a base station (generally several km away). It should also have some sort of PC connectivity (so that I can download signal strength data directly into a laptop, for example).

I know that this sort of equipment can be incredibly expensive - obviously I'd like to find something on the cheaper side, but I do have a fair amount of funding from my university if necessary.

If you can't recommend any products specifically, can you at least offer some advice or point me in the direction of some other place with more info?

Thanks!

Does anyone have any information on frequency counters or RF counters or things of that source? It seems that they might be able to fulfill my needs at a much cheaper cost - is that true?

I bought some stuff via company at http://www.metrictest.com/ They seem nice enough.

Such equipment does tend to cost about "one car" for each piece of gear.
