Specs for 530/550/630/650 LCDs? - HELP from Samsung tech

Nov 27, 2008 12:53PM PST

Hi, I'm trying to decide between several different samsung models. can someone from samsung clarify some issues on the LCD line:
is the contrast ratio of the Series 5 (530/550) all the same? 30,000:1. and the series 6 at 50,000:1? are these the accurate ratios? I've seen different numbers in different sites.

do all samsung lcd's in the series 5, 6 & 7 lines swivel? all have PIP?

how does the 530 differ from the 550, other than in WISELINK (USB)? Any significant differences between the 630 and the 650? I heard there's different the in glass being matte or glossy?

do all series 6 lcd's have Automotion (120hz)? and no Series 5 have 120hz?

I've already looked at the comparison page features at samsung.com
http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/subtype/compare.do?group=tv&type=tv&subtype=lcd&prda=LN40A550P3FXZC&prdb=LN40A650A1FXZC&prdc=LN40A530P1FXZC#

630 settings
Nov 30, 2008 4:28AM PST

While you're reviewing the 630s, I was wondering if you could help me get the settings for non HD channels to display better. These channels seem to be overprocessed, compared to my non 120hz tv. I've tried turning off the 120, dynamic contrast. The Edge Enhancement feature is not available for my Cable Box source. Do I need a firmware upgrade, and if so, what is it? I love my tv, but want it to kick butt on all channels.

The info you asked for:
Dec 1, 2008 1:27AM PST

Your questions in bold:

is the contrast ratio of the Series 5 (530/550) all the same?

The 37A530 is 12,000:1
The 40A530 is 20,000:1 and so is the 40", 46" and 52"

The 32A550 is 15,000:1 and so is the 37"
The 40A550 is 30,000:1 and so is the 46" and 52"

and the series 6 at 50,000:1?

The 40A630 is 40,000:1 and so is the 46" and 52"
The 40A650 is 50,000:1 and so is the 46" and 52"

I've seen different numbers in different sites.

Then you've come to the right place. Happy

how does the 530 differ from the 550, other than in WISELINK (USB)?

The A550 has WiseLink (the 530 does not) and the Contrast Ratio is different.

Any significant differences between the 630 and the 650? I heard there's different the in glass being matte or glossy?

Well, there's no glass on the LCD panels. I believe you're referring to the SuperClear panel on the A650, and that does bump up the contrast ratio. People who have a lot of ambient light might be better served with the A630, but that's purely a preference.

Also, the A650 incorporates InfoLink, and the A630 does not. (RSS Feed for News, Stocks and local weather). There is also an additional HDMI port on the A650.

do all series 6 lcd's have Automotion (120hz)? and no Series 5 have 120hz?

The A630 and A650 have 120Hz, the A530 and A550 Series do not. Correct.

do all samsung lcd's in the series 5, 6 & 7 lines swivel? all have PIP?

I'd check some other threads regarding the PIP functionality, as it is limited. A quick serach using C|Net's search Engine with "PIP" in the "Samsung Threads" should bring up a few of those. I'll let the forum members speak on that.

The Series 5, 6, and 8 have swivel bases. Series 7 does not.

Hope that helps! If you have any more questions, please let me know.
