Speaker System

by freakwithahat / January 20, 2006 3:48 PM PST

Hello. I'm looking to upgrade my speakers for my PC. I don't have a sound card, just the basic integrated sound. Therefore, anything that doesn't connect through a headphone jack is out of the question. I don't need amazing power, but I do need value. I'm on a pretty tight budget ( up to $100) and I'm looking for a speaker system, preferrably with a sub. Any recommendations? I had one in mind, but I don't need the power and they are a little expensive, along with the sub is huge. I also have a small area to place the sub. The one I had in mind ,before realizing the amount of power, was the Logitech Z-2300, only $100 on Amazon. Thanks

Only the bazillion dollar speakers don't connect with a headphone jack. All others, used by sane people are used with your regular headphone jack. First off, what motherboard do you have, so that I can get the best quality out of it? Or better yet, what is the name of the onboard sound? AC'97? Intel? That way, I can get the best sound out for your money.

I was going to say this set:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836121118

But is the subwoofer still too big? I would go smaller, but for the price the teensy sound just wouldn't cut it. Also: Usually the smaller subs have weaker bass sounds. Just saying... My subwoofer is about 12in x 8in x 4in. And gets most all low sounds very nicely. And it is a no-name company. Expect better from yours.

Thanks, but a few more questions.

Sorry, i'm not the most "geeky" person when it comes to things like that. The sub is a perfectly fine size. So, I don't need a special or premium sound card (like one from Creative) to use a 3.1, 4.1, or 5.1 system? Sorry, I don't know my system specs, as I said I'm quite stupid when it comes to things like this. However, I'm pretty sure my Motherboard is an Intel because my chip is an Intel Pentium 4 processor. I know that I don't have a special sound card, just the normal Intel Integrated. Thanks

My bad
by ikjadoon / January 21, 2006 6:49 AM PST

Sorry! Well, I am hoping that you won't need a new card as plenty of onboards can hold a 5.1 or so. I just want to be sure. In actuality, you will, of course, get sound but it will be the same sound from all speakers whereas in 5.1 capable some of your speakers (rear, left, right) will have different sounds, and when placed correctly will give you the appearance as though you are "there".

Anyways, download Belarc Advisor, from here:

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Just click the download button, click save, maybe to your Temp folder, and double click the file, and install. When done, open it. It'll launch in your internet browser, whether it be the regular Internet Explorer or the new Mozilla Firefox. Scroll down to Multimedia and tell me what it says there.

~Ibrahim~

P.S. Not being mean, but most computers with an Intel processor most likely don't have an Intel Chip for the motherboard. A bit confusing, sorry.

a start, but not 100% what I'm looking for. My fault, though. Do this: start, run, type in dxdiag. After it has loaded, click save all information. Save it to your desktop, and open the text file. Copy it all, or just the sound part, and paste it in your reply. Thanks!

In reply to: Here it is

I give you a 85% chance that it DOES have 5.1. I've chatted with Dell, called them, nothing. Went through plently of sites, yet none can say a YES or NO. No on can confirm it or not. BUT, BUT most of ADI's sound cards, the parent company of SoundMax or something, have 5.1. I do have some, solidish evidence. The 4700 in past generations have had 5.1 audio and I then assume yours should too. I'm sorry I could not be of more help. And sorry that I couldn't reply earlier. Been busy...

What do 5.1 cards usually look like?

I was installing some more RAM to my desktop and when I was looking for the case opening i noticed something about my sound input. It looked like there were multiple channels or something. It had a green input where my current crappy speakers go. It also has a light blue input, a yellow input and a black input. All of them had the same type of symbols, just some were pointed in different directions. The green was pointed toward the left of the case. The blue to the right. The black and yellow were above the blue and green. The black had two symbols pointing inward and the yellow had a different type of symbol that looked something like this ((|)) the inner parentheses were smaller than the outer ones and the middle line had points on the end, like a line segment. This doesn't look like a normal stereo config. Tell me if i'm right. Thanks

Those markings seem to fit the markings on my SB Audigy Gamer card. You have 5.1!!! They all are usually the same size, I'm not exactly sure what the yellow one could be. Maybe a Stereo system-type of output? Wow... I feel extremely stupid right about now. Why oh why didn't I ask you that in the beginning....*Sigh* Well, at least we know now! Good luck!

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
