Speaker advice for home theater?

Oct 15, 2005 1:37PM PDT

I'm in the market for a full set of speakers for my main listening/viewing room. We primarily watch movies and TV, in HD when available, rather than listen to music. With a great system, we'll probably do a bit more music listening, but the primary purpose will still be Home Theater. I've pretty much decided on the Denon AVR-3805, which I can get locally for well under $1000 and was thinking about spending the same for the speakers.

Size matters, insofaras the wife vetoed the idea of having large floor-standing fronts. So the Klipsch "Sound of the Cinema" pair is right out of the question. That pretty much limits me to bookshelf-sized speakers. The Denon is capable of powering 7.1, but I think I'd be satisfied with a 5.1 configuration. Good floor-shaking bass is important to me and I don't mind erring on the bright side, but OTOH I don't want the fatigue one gets with overly-bright or harsh speakers. A good crisp, accurate soundstage would be ideal.

So I have two questions for the group. What speakers would you recommend given the above constraints? And where can I place them in a family room that is poorly-suited for sound? The family room is a "greatroom" with the kitchen and the breakfast nook. To make matters even worse, the TV is in a corner and viewed from a sofa that cuts diagonally across the area. It's really a sound engineer's nightmare. Any advice about the speakers and the room would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. My wife wanted to remind me that for the speakers, "cuteness counts".

I replaced my old klipch with a matched set of atlantic tech speakers and there subwoffer, and the soundfield is awsome, also they sound as powerful as speakers 3 times there size, Also Iam running 2 speakers in the rear wall So when I watch movies like star wars the back two speakers kick in and give you the feeling that your in the movie If you want the model # of the speakers I bought e-mail me and they ran about $1700 cadillacstew@aol.com

Good "bookshelf" size speakers

If you are constrained to bookshelf speakers try the RS250 home theater package from av123.com. Here is the link: http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=14.1

The fit and finish are great, the sound is great and the pricing is very nice. Their RSC200 center channel (aka "Bigfoot") gets rave reviews. You can mix and match ... the suggested package is only one combo available. You'll want to add a sub. Look at this one http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=subwoofers&product=1.1

Happy hunting.
