Question

Sparks from computer when plugged in

Jan 5, 2015 5:05AM PST

I brought my American computer to Germany. When plugging it in for the first time, sparks flew from the where the power cord plugs into the computer, and it tripped the circuit breaker (the computer was plugged into a power strip).

Like an idiot, I realized that I didn't switch the voltage from 110 to 220 V. I looked inside the computer and didn't see any damage, so I tried plugging it in again. This time it turned on for about 5 seconds, then there were sparks (and it tripped the circuit breaker) again. I let it sit for about 4 hours, and I just tried it again (maybe that was a stupid idea...), but the same thing happened.

Do I need to replace the power supply? Could something else have been fried during this whole process?

You can't tell until you tear down and do over. It only happened once but a client brought in a PC they build and wanted to show us the issue and it did the spark poof show. It fried everything from PSU to all cards and drives.
