Space disappearing!

Dec 2, 2004 7:31PM PST

My disc space on C is disappearing and I have deleted my temperory internet files. When I do a disk cleanup I always go to the folder for other options. I have deleted all unnecessary programs. I have gone up into tools and deleted internet files there and into my computer and deleted Cookies. I am running XP Pro. I am down to 18 MB so I do not have the use of my search to look for unnecessary files. I have My system restore turn off. Any help would be appreciated.

Sadly, that System Restore being off is something you may regret. It's not the cause of your issue, but the usual is virus, trojan, spyware and not a Windows XP issue.

There are a few that try to run XP on 10 Gigabyte or smaller hard disks and they will make posts like yours, but I have no cure for them. I suggest they try a smaller OS.

Running Out of Disk Space
Mar 10, 2005 6:55AM PST

I just upgraded to a 4 GB hard drive and I only have 356 MB left. I am currently running XP Pro. I have nothing loaded on this laptop yet! No Word, Excel, Powerpoint, No Music, no jpgs. I have not yet loaded my camera, printer, scanner, handheld. I don't have any room!!! Any suggestions?? If you are suggesting a move to another OS, do you suggest Windows 98?? That's what I had before...do you know what the size difference is??
Thanks so much!

One of my favorite small utilities is i.disk (free to download). It shows exactly what folders occupy what space. Don't use the built in delete; use Explorer for that.
This is just to get more insight in where the problem is. However, run scandisk first (requires a reboot on XP).

The program was what I needed. Most of my space usage is in Software Distribution and System 32. The only thing is I don't know what I can delete. Any suggestion?

why not upgrade?

Why not just get a bigger harddrive?

Windows XP itself takes a bit more than 2GB. There really isn't much things you can delete. Reverting to an eariler OS would just save a few hundred MB anyway. A small harddisk isn't workable no matter what you do.
